I remember reading absolute posts from Blizzard posters in the official forum about how they were never ever going to be selling virtual items, period. Of course that was a few years ago, Funny how things change over time.
Again, I'd ask for your source. I did a scan of BlueTracker (keeping track of blue posts on the official forums since they were opened), and I cannot find a post that implies this. There are numerous posts that state that they have no plans to sell gold or characters, or to sell any items that affect gameplay - but nothing about never selling cosmetic add-ons to the game.
And again, I'd mention that the moment they released the collector's edition of WoW, they had sold their first cosmetic add-on; after all, you can't get that pet without shelling out the extra dough for the CE box.
List of blue posts with the word "sell" ranging back to 2005

Looks of Rusted Proto > Looks of Celestial Steed. Your points about "Grey" Tier 9 and Tier 10 fall flat on their face. Sorry.

What? Armor looks like stuff now?

Heh, the mount is worth it for new alts on a different server; seeing as it scales up through the different riding skills, it's literally the only mount you'll need.

So my economic viability (whether or not i can seamlessly endure a 25 dollar expense for a 'fluff' item) is jarring to my game experience?
What?
Here's a different spin.
The more revenue that Blizzard can reap from this game and any assorted offerings (from wearable tabards *giggle* to beer steins and flashy mounts) is a telling economic signal to the decisions makers that the game continues to be enormously successful and is viable and should have more and more funds appropriated for its continued improvement, enhancement, and support.
tldr version: The more Blizz makes on this game, the more they will continue to work on it and hence provide us with more entertainment.

By the claims being made here it obviously has an effect on the game.
Guess what EVERYTHING THEY DO HAS AN EFFECT!
When they make a new raid zone it effects the game some will think it sucks and &*!@# some think its too hard and it needs to be nerfed, some people think etc... etc... etc..
So really this argument is about as dumb as crap because ever since the game first came out they have made so many changes the game has been effected like 1000 times at least.
I think at this point the only thing they fear is if they do something that ^&*!es off 50+% of the fanbase so much that the game's future is in jeopardy.

Oh, and your point about people's real-world standings being reflected if they buy a Celestial Steed? You're absolutely right: I know, when I see someone with a Steed, that they have far more money than sense -- or that they are far too into this game for their own good -- and I know that I still have the $25 that they do not have, which I can spend on something far more enjoyable.
You talk a lot about opinion, but the way you present this doesn't sound that way. I happen to think the mount looks nice. I happen to have $25 that I can spend on it that is coming from my "fun spending money" anyway that would be spent on some random entertainment anyway. How is it really different from buying a DVD? They're both pointless things I look at, but I buy them because I enjoy them.
My wife and I are both gainfully employed. We have more then enough money to cover our expenses, live very comfortably, and like to buy random things we like because, well, pretty much everybody does that if they can afford to. If it were five years ago and we were both still college students, then no I probably wouldn't buy it, because then the extra expense wouldn't be a sound decision.
However, because I am financially secure at this stage in my life and have money to spend on fun, you KNOW that I have far more money then sense. I'm sorry that not everybody who plays this game is destitute, but the fact remains that every single person who plays this game is essentially throwing away their money every month. They get nothing for it, they just enjoy it. I really don't understand the outpouring of hate that some of us are able to spend just a little bit more money then others, and that being financially stable (we're not "wealthy" by any means) and having a little extra cash suddenly makes me a blithering idiot.
Depending on your subscription you're likely paying $12-$15 a month. That's $144-$180 a year. That's totally fine with everyone, but a one-time $25 fee with a mount for all your characters on top of that is just totally unreasonable?
Ok. Have fun with that. And tell me I have no sense if that makes you feel better, but I'm still living comfortably, married, financialy stable, saving up for a nice vacation, and still putting money aside to start a family in the near future. Boy, do I feel foolish.

I just thought of something randomly while perusing the multiple threads about this subject. We all know that the mount and Lil XT just made Blizz a crap ton of money. Some have pointed out it's a great way to load test for when Blizzcon tickets hit the store, but here's another thought.
Cataclysm will be upon us sometime this year. If it's the roaring success I think and hope it's going to be, that means there will be more players, and more support staff necessary to keep those players playing.
I think tha this is Blizz getting the funding to start hiring more people. More customer service so we hopefully don't see our 24-48 hour ticket times shoot to a week, or more. More techies to work their computer voodoo so the stability and other issues that come with a major content update or overhaul get taken care of faster.
Yess, we know someone at Blizzard is probably rolling on a mountain of $100s and giggling like a little girl, but after he's done rolling, it'll be swept up and spent to support the game.

It doesn't affect my gameplay, or any other sane person's.
You're a liar. Try again.

Since there are umpteen million threads about the mount already, I chose one to put my comment into.
The whole celestial steed thing reminds me of tattoos. For a while, they were cool because very few people had them. If you had one, you belonged to a group with status. You got a tattoo to be different.
Now, however, tattoos seem to be the norm. You're different if you
DON'T
have a tattoo. I could buy a celestial steed if I wanted one, but I don't want one simply because everyone seems to have one. I'll continue riding my
Ochre Skeletal Warhorse
to be different. Let the conformists conform if they so choose, but there's no reason to put them down for being sheeple.

This post is under the assumption that everyone is buying the mount to conform with everyone not.
I'm reasonable sure this is not the case.
1) It's a cool looking mount, and if it was in a raid, I'd, and others, would want it just the same, if not more and would strive to get it.
2) It's handy. You can't say it's not. It scales with your riding level and goes to all your alts, along with ones yet to be made? Handy.
I find it hard to believe that people are willing to spend 25$ on a game to try and "be cool".
Basically, your post is saying that everyone who buys the mount is sheeple, and yet if you yorself don't belong to this group of sheeple, you belong to the sheeple looking down on people buying the mount for "conforming".
WTG.
Edit: Grammar error or two. It's late >.<

The real question is, why does anyone care?
So blizz sells sweet-looking mounts for a few bucks. If your problem is that you think the item itself gives players some kind of advantage over folks that didn't buy it, learn to read... it doesn't.
Truth is nobody here has a genuine issue. You might think you do, but if you have morality issues with digital purchases, you better quit playing altogether, since your $15/month has been one giant purchase for however many months/years you've been playing. Go donate all your money to the march of dimes. Give me your stuff too, it's the moral thing to do.

Nice. I guess you didn't consider the obvious: 25 bucks is chump change for people that work for a living, also how long you been playing, how many monthly fees you been paying? But another few dollars makes them 'in too deep'.
Seriously, this is why I'm a hermit by choice. Almost everyone with a brain stem needs a reason to look down on someone else, even something as silly as a horse in a video game.
Go play farmville, it's an equal-opportunity game.

I also believe people would want a 3-seater, big brown turd that Blizzard classifies as a scaling mount. I don't mean to say that people bought the mount to conform; I mean to say that Blizzard can sell anything and people will buy it (like
sheeple
).
I find it hard to believe that people are willing to spend 25$ on a game to try and "be cool".
And I find it hard to believe the convenience it provides is worth $25. If it's really worth $25 because it's pretty, then hack the game's models on the client side and ride it all you want.
