Hard to stay focused though with Cataclysm around the bend. I find I'm much more focused on other aspects of the game since current gear will become outmoded.
Exactly! I felt the shield was a nice upgrade for me but I'm already tanking ICC 25 mans on my alt tank so I can't be that off the mark. Plus who knows what kind of new gold sinks will come out with Cata. I still got plenty of alts to level up and get somewhat semi geared. That 5k could go towards another alt's epic mount training for flying through the old world.
6 toons with epic mount, cold weather, and dual spec training and counting, alts tend to get expensive.

This week I think I'm finally going to work more earnestly on T10ing out my holy set and getting my haste back up. Hard to stay focused though with Cataclysm around the bend. I find I'm much more focused on other aspects of the game since current gear will become outmoded.
I don't get this. This is true with
every single tier of gear Blizzard produces
. Besides, it's not like Cataclysm is likely to come out THAT soon anyways. We're probably going to be looking at a 4th quarter release if it's even released this year at all.
Point is, your logic is flawed.

Why is it flawed? Would you START your
Shadowmourne
questline now so late in the game? By the time you are finished with it, Cataclysm would be out with their new 85 epics and these items with long retrieval times will be outdated and not worth the gold/saronite you spent on it.

Certainly would, and am. Collecting souls on trash while our Ret Pally gathers his shards. By the time he's just about finished with his shards I'll be ready for infusions and then I can start gathering shards.
It's flawed, because Cataclysm is still in F&F Alpha for crying out loud. It's not coming that soon. It's still going to be another half a year most likely. What are you going to do in that time? Twiddle your thumbs? There's still tons of time to make gold for Cataclysm.
And like I said, this is no different than going from Tier N to Tier (N + 1). Why bother enchanting that 258 weapon with Berserking when that 264 drop off of the new first boss in ICC is available so soon? (This actually happened).

Basically true. Why get any gear if there is just another tier around the corner and you can buy the gear you get now with badges that will soon be abundantly easy to get through heroics? (For example, eventually Frost badges will be as easy to get as Triumph).
Still waiting for that stupid Heroic Neverending Winter to drop. 7 tries and counting. Sure, I will replace it in Cata...but that doesn't make me stop wanting it now
.

I'm going to be playing SC2 baby, 7/27. That's like a month and a half?
I'm not saying that I'm not raiding anymore. Just that getting a shield that I've been waiting for on my alt vs giving it to someone else that wanted it more on their main isn't the worst thing in the world.
And as for the shadowmourne, you know that it takes a while to get the shards right? You're on part 3 of the quest. Assuming you one shot the other parts, that's still ~2-3 weeks to get to the shards. Since you need 50 shards, and they drop ~8-9/12 each week if you're lucky. That's still 7+ weeks IF your guild allows you to collect the shards and if it drops.
10 weeks from now you're at end of August / beginning of Sept when you finally get it. Who's to say they won't release anything in 3.3.5 with comparable stats?
I guess I'm just more casual at this game and take a more relaxed view on my toons.

Coming from a guild that's 11/12 heroic and well on their way to a second completed Shadowmourne, I'm aware of the time required for the shards. It's also THE BiS weapon, and will remain so for the expansion. I guarantee you that (look at Val'anyr as an example).
I guess I'm just more casual at this game and take a more relaxed view on my toons.
I suppose, but I don't see why you would just give up on a character that you're actively playing. Passing to a main over an alt is one thing, but why not strive to be better when you're capable of it?

I could understand if you want
the weapon
for the lore, legend, and bragging rights. But strictly from a min/max perspective (as the tone in your replys kind of reflects) it's not necessary the best investment. Call me old school but I remember the days of people collecting enough mats to make
Sulfuras, Hand of Rag
or
Thunderfury
only to finally complete it at the dawn of the next expansion. They got what, 3-4 weeks use out of it before shelving it for the better items. These items took 15+ weeks to collect enough mats for, the get-to-use ratio isn't favorable.

In your case it sounds like there's already a paladin on the queue for the shards. Depending on where he's at, that might be 2-4 weeks you have to tack onto your schedule before you get enough shards to complete it.

I think what armill3 and I are saying is that we aren't giving up on raiding per say. Just that running each week to ICC and hoping and praying for the shield to drop is now a thing of the past. I'm still waiting for my Bryntoll on my alt paladin for his offspec, and I would gladly roll on it when it drops. I'm not opposed to upgrades at all for any reason. But I would clearly not waste my time and resources to start on
Shadowmourne
at this point in time.

Still, hard to quantify personal enjoyment. I still use Thunderfury (there are a surprising number of limited usage, even in ICC)...and still get a kick out of it when I pull it out. Not to mention, you always get whispers in DAL and then in group, people are like, "ZOMG, Thunderfury!"

It took my paladin 16 gunships for the shield to even drop...luckily the other tank was a DK, I surely would have lost the roll, it is the nature of things, even got one of those axes to play with as a threat tank weapon in the mean time....
Much similar was the 20 Marrowgar kills for the mace to drop, again, only one needing that.
Was tanking in some 25's a few times where tank BoE items would drop, but rather than being able to roll on them the GL snatched them up and that was it...thanks a lot pal.

Well, I got the 264 caster gloves off of LDW, but that was after the shield was ninja rolled and accidentally distributed to an enhancement shaman named Shazami, who of course decided to play the ^&*!@# card and not respond to everyone's pleas to pass it to me. Unsurprisingly, he was kicked in short order, but damn.
Any of you guys have any luck with thoughtful, plea-fully written tickets?
Had enough badges, so I went ahead and bought the T10 shoulders for healing. Was disappointed that they actually have less haste than the 245 plate offsets, not to mention the 264 LDW gloves having less haste than 245 T9. And then of course there are the Bracers of Pale Illumination...
Blergh. Haste is getting annoyingly low - time to craft the Ensorcelled.
Why do people have to be such @#$%^&bags?
It's okay, all of the extra int you get is more than worth it.

Another week and the shield dropped again. Yeah I was in disbelief. I actually left the raid mid way because we wiped on LDW 10 man because the deeps weren't switching targets and we were attempting the weekly (save Darnavan). The dps talked me to give it another try and we one shot everything from then on.
Gunship battle was over and the shield dropped again. I won the roll 2 over the OT. 2 weeks in a row and I win both rolls, who would have figured. I guess there is a RNG god after all.

When cata hits, generally people won't be running ICC anymore. It's like the people running the old school raids BT, Sunwell, etc. Sure you can run it to get the
Warglaives
, but which how many pugs actually get formed and down him?
People rarely run Naxx or OS anymore, and it's the same expansion (WotLK) content. When Cataclysm hits, it'll be the same story. Get it now before its much more difficult to find people to run it later.
