Is it just me or do some tanks/healers have big egos?

Tank (main) and Heals (main alt), as well as many various DPS here. Note that this is not directed at the OP or anyone else in this thread unless it really does apply to them. Just speaking my mind here.
When it comes to tanking, I do have a big ego, and most successful tanks will. The tank is the party's natural leader, and if he or she fails, the group will probably fail. Keeping a perfect rotation, being on top of every patrol, timing every pull and ability, knowing every ability that every trash mob and every boss has at their disposal and being ready to counter it every time...it's an art form, and like many tanks I suspect, I'm proud of being good at it. But throw in having to perform our art while contending with trigger-happy or otherwise impatient group members, keeping their mistakes from killing my heals, me, or (least importantly) them...yes, after a time it does give us long-time successful tanks an ego. Because we've carried many like you before, and we'll carry many more like you in the future. You're just one of a long line of random, replaceable DPS that thinks their dinnertime, school bus, favorite cartoon, or inability to urinate
before
they queued is more important than the rest of the group, which makes you pointless to a tank.
I'm not a mean guy or looking to dog anyone; if I'm running randoms it's to carry a fresh 80 guildie/friend for emblems, or for my daily frost. If somebody's meter numbers are low, I honestly don't care so long as the instance gets finished. We all had to gear up at some point, right? Me too! But when I'm running randoms, I am
hauling ass
. In the beginning of the instance, I tell everyone 'buff up, I keep a fast pace, if you need mana holler at me', then we're off like a rocket. I do not stop for your afks (unless you're the healer, in which case that buys you that right), and if you feel I'm not fast enough and you start getting ahead of me, taking aggro, or otherwise being an idiot...only way you're living is if the healer puts in overtime keeping you alive.
I suspect most tanks feel similar.. "In this instance, I am god (so long as my healer keep it rolling)". That brings with it ego, confidence, and attitude. As a dps, be up to par, or be ready to learn if you're new, and all will usually go well. I've really never met a group of people that were just out to get an obviously new 80 for looking bad on the meter or making newbie mistakes. But I've seen plenty of people simply being jerkoffs and not understanding that no, I didn't kick you because you spam recount every 10 seconds (even though that's jesus omg annoying), I didn't kick you because you insist on attacking anything BUT the primary target in every trash pull (even though that's pretty valid). I didn't even kick you because you need on every damn thing dropping in the instance because you claim to have an alt that could use (lame). No, I kicked you because there's only room for one prick in this group, and I'm so very better at it than you.

A big part of this problem is the damn DPS infatuation everyone has. I always try to give the tank plenty of time to round up the mobs before opening up. I would say that my "respect" for the tank costs me 20% or more in overall damage. I am consistantly 1-2 in raw DPS, but usually last in overall damage because of this. Biggest place this hurts is in VoA. Most pug leaders will look at recount after the trash pulls and dump anyone that isn't up to their standards. I can consistantly pull 6k+ on any boss in there, but have been booted for "sub-par" DPS on the trash leading to the boss, all because I try to show tanks respect.
As for ego's. Hell, look at the game. We are playing characters with unbelievable powers and abilities, killing monsters and dragons and people that have the power to detroy worlds at their fingertips. Of course we have egos!

I have also came across tanks who get #$%^ed if you tell them to speed up or if you pull a monster or two
to them.
This is very bad etiquette on your part. A tank goes at the speed he feels he personally can handle and will keep the group alive. Also if you pull un-agrod mobs to him, key cooldowns may not be ready which could result in the death of a party member like the healer, which then leads to a wipe.
Aye, nobody should be pulling but the Tank. Or, the individual whom the Tank (or the party/raid leader) designates to pull.
It's not just bad etiquette. It's bad teamwork. And, I see it all the time, as my Resto-Shammy is leveling up. The excuse which DPS players make is that they want to go faster. Or, "Hey, it's just a game." Or, "Hey, we're low level." If they aren't serious about the role they signed on for (and which their chosen toon may ONLY be allowed to perform) then they ought to either quit playing that toon, or leave/be kicked out of the group, so that someone who is serious can be brought in.
.
If there is a problem with a Tank? More often than not, at both level 80, and with my Shammy, I see Tanks going
too quickly
. And, causing wipes, as a result.
Just last night, one Tank threatened, "If we have ONE MORE WIPE, I'm outta here." The other four of us responded, "Well, if that's your attitude... let's just kick you now. You caused all three of these wipes."
A good Tank does not pull more mobs than his Healer can heal for, or his DPS can nuke down. A good Tank also doesn't do things which prevent his Healer from being able to heal him, like running around corners, breaking LoS with the Healer, unless he's willing to get a heal after he's down to 20%.

Has anyone thought that it may not be ego, but simply a defense mechanism against all the crap that gets thrown our way? The tank and healer usually have the most stressful and tense jobs in the group, and on top of that they often get abuse or orders from the dps.
...
wow, that turned into quite a tale :D
That was an excellent approach to the question.
My wife is a Tankadin now. She had to go through a similarly difficult process. Though, to a slightly lesser degree, since I would go into several of these PUGs with her. And, she was able to get some advice from a few guildies.
My wife normally has a very quiet, soft-hearted nature. But, she has developed certain approaches to problems with other team members. She is developing her confidence as a Tank. And, some might see some of her statements as arrogant or egotistical. Regardless, she is rarely wrong, and she usually has a good reason to say something to someone, if she's got anything to say at all.
(I can't wait to get my Healer to 80, so we can take those roles together)
Another reason why Tanks and/or Healers might appear arrogant? They negotiate group disputes from a position of power. If a DPSer gets out of hand, they can be booted and quickly replaced in the LFG. Not so, with the other two, more difficult roles.
If a Tank or Healer gets annoyed enough to leave the group? Frequently, the group falls apart after that. Or, has a decently long wait for a replacement. And when a Healer or Tank pops into a half-completed dungeon, they naturally will ask why it is that the previous Tank or Healer left. They may be looking at the performance and behavior of the rest of the team with more attention than normal.

Umm... Yeah. Is it just me or do some DPS have big ego issues? Damn, even "some" NPCs have ego issues. (Don't look so smug, it was merely a setback, I'm still betr den you.)

In my battlegroup, it seems to me that the majority of tanks with 5.7k+ GS (aka they raid ICC 25 regularly) have their egos pouring out of their a$$. They don't even bother to gear check the healer. Either they chain pull relentlessly, which the healer can't heal through; or they Need roll on everything they can because they feel they're "entitled to it".
Over the past week I have have 6 upgrades ninja'd from my rogue by the egotistical &*!@s, and can attest to at least 20 other upgrades that were ninja'd from party members.
Also, I have had about 4 dungeons a day wipe on the initial pull due to tanks either:
not waiting for people to finish zoning in
pulling after the healer switched spes (no mana)
chain pulling more than he and / or the healer can handle
And about the thought of "I'm the tank, I call the shots"... no. It's the healer. If I'm not ready, you're not getting healed. I don't care about my repair bill if it teaches people a lesson.

I love how most of the tank posts absolutely prove the OP.
Most of the tank posts said 'yes, we have an ego and here's why'.
You keen observer, you.
