Right, so the point of language is to communicate effectively. If they got the point across THEN LEAVE IT AT THAT. You know if someone types rouge, they mean rogue, so your point is moot. As for their, they're, and there, there is a thing called context and any intelligent person can figure it out and move on. That is the whole point of this post, it's not about miscommunication, you know what the %^&* they mean to say, but you elitists need to drive home they point that they misspelled a word to make yourselves feel better.
Or maybe we do it because, I don't know . . . we'd rather not communicate with people who are grammatically below a fourth-grade level?
If we take what you've said to the extreme, then we can get rid of most language. We'll simply grunt and point when we want something, and shake our head yes or no.
The point of language is to communicate effectively. However, I have no requirement, nor desire, to put up with someone's lazy misspellings and horrific grammar just because
I
happen to be intelligent enough to catch the context of their statement and thereby decipher what they mean. Thus, when you make a mistake, and I notice it, I'll point it out.
If asking that people communicate clearly and follow the basic rules of grammar and spelling is "elitist", then call me elite - and I'll call you a frelling retard.

I like how most people in this thread are justifying being rude to people for their spelling and grammar mistakes. How about if a stranger walks up to you in public and punches you in the balls because he doesn't like that you wore your baseball cap backwards? That's not the correct way to wear one, after all, so you should be treated horribly for your mistake. That's basically what most people on this forum are saying.
You know what a person is trying to say when they write "rouge," so read it, process it, and move on to the next sentence. If you want to be a jerk because someone mistakenly spelled a word wrong or used "there" instead of "their," then get a life and remember: we're all only human and no one is above making a simple error. Forgive and forget.

There's a rather large difference between making a typo and continuously misspelling a word.
Essentially what you're saying is this: Those who can do should coddle those who
can't
won't.
We'll have to agree to disagree, because frankly I feel it's that attitude that results in students graduating from high school with an inability to spell simple, everyday words correctly, or that led to schools accepting "l33t sp33k" answers so as to not harm the egos of their fragile pupils.

And you know for a fact that every single person who makes errors is doing it because they are speaking in "l33t sp33k?"
There's a difference between correcting a person and being a pompous prick, which is what most people on here are.

And that's my point. You guys are elitists. I've known some absolutely BRILLIANT people who can't spell worth for @#$%. In fact, I've known many smart people who can't spell.
And I can guarantee you that if you corrected them, then they would retain the information and spell it correctly next time. If they don't have that capacity, then they either suffer from a disability such as dyslexia, or they aren't as smart as you think they are.
No that is not what you get if you take my point to the extreme. yoo mite git sumtng liek dis, but you still know what I am saying. Grunting and nodding is a gross misanalogy.
No, it really isn't. The root of language is the grunt and the body motion.
If it takes that much extra brain power for you to deciper simple spelling/grammar errors, then you are the "frelling retard". You are what we call a pedant. A simple, narrow-minded, elitist pedant who really must take a discussion on some elementary school grammar lesson tangent simply because you are that stuck up and rotten inside.
The entire topic is about this very thing. I'm not taking it on a tangent.
But thanks for the straw men in there.

It's the *!@#ing internet. Holy $%^&. Get a life. Why even waste your time trying to apply formalisms on this gigantic wasteland anyways? What's here today will be gone tomorrow. We're not writing a dissertation. I too sometimes mock people that say kyoote, or kewl, or fuk off, but only in jest. You seem to have some deep irreconciliable hatred of it which I find a bit pathetic.
Thank you. A very good point.

The obvious difference is "free speech". Your right to swing your hands, ends at my nose.
I can still tell you that you talk funny, all day long.

I don't see how that's a difference.
Then you are either uneducated, or stubborn.
No offense, but you
should
know the difference, and we cannot have even a simple conversation until you can tell the difference between someone saying something, and someone attacking another person.
