I like how tons of people spell Defense, defence. Defense is the American spelling, defence is perfectly acceptable in England among other places.
We have all the guns. Defen
S
e.
.
(You're completely correct... but we arrogant Americans tend to want our English linguantecedents to conform to our own spelling)

This is a geniune post. I'm not a troll, I'm not a flamer. I'm not trying to look intelligent, nor make people dumb. I don't think I'm better than any of you, and I don't assume everyone's stupid.
Right, glad to get that out of the way! So, I've noticed this a lot -
"LOL you noob, it's spelled Rogue!"
Well, it's an English only forum, so there has to be a point of literacy. I agree with rogue/rouge being trival, but the people who do it commonly make many more mistakes as well. Also, it's a so well known typo, we should be able to do it by now.
"It's not spelled x it's spelled y, and therefore you're a worse person than me"
What? Being able to use grammar properly is a sign that someone is educated, and thus it is actually a valid point that if you can't grasp spelling, you're probably not going to be huge in debate. If you mean worse as in evil, I doubt anyone here distinguishes someone's morals with how they use the English language.
"Read the stickies! (Out of date ones)"
Invalid point, because if it's listed in the stickies, then we say read the stickies. If it's not, then we don't. The date of them don't matter. Also, what stickies are out of date?
And other things I won't go in to, because I can't be bothered :)
A perfect example of why people do this. Because people think they can make their points valid with insufficient evidence and legibility, and they don't because they can't be bothered to actually contribute to the conversation.
So, the first two. Why bother telling them that in such a derogatory way? A lot of people don't have English as their primary language. Before you go insulting them, remember two things -
1) They have bothered to learn anotherr language.
If I go surfing, despite living in New York, does that make me any better a surfer? No.
2) A Mis-spelling often doesn't take away from the content of a post. But if often does. Rouge and Rogue are to very different things.
Those in mind, why to people find it neccessary to correct others on spelling and grammar, ignoring the content of the post - which can sometimes be very, very interesting - and ultimately lead nowhere? Or you could ignore the post and the misspellings, and only read the QQ, and make threads like these that ultimately lead nowhere?
And for the third one, blimey. Offer an opinion? Yeah cool. But why 'Stickies'. Ok, if we get "omg lolz how dus 1 lvl frost plox" then yes I can understand. I wouldn't even bother posting. But please, remember just one thing - not everyone is experienced here!
You realize the stickies have "read before posting" plastered all over them? If you can read, you can use the stickies first.
I know when I came to Wowhead, I didn't even know what a sticky was. And when I did, I didn't know where to find them.
Doesn't matter if you know what a sticky was, but the fact you failed to read the thread on the top of your page with "read before posting" in it's title and posted by a moderator, is what makes you a fool.
TL;DR - why is everyone horrible to people on things that don't matter?
(Let me sum up every answer. Anonymity. There, it's a rhetorical post now xD)
Great, if you think you have the answer, don't post the thread. That's called a troll.
Peace.

Well I learned something, was not aware you UK people actually spelled it Defence, reason why I never would've thought that is one of my very good friends is from London. And he plays on the same server as me and he plays a warrior tank and when he talks about defense he always spells it like that, not the other way.

And I'll ask you, why are you so against having your mistakes corrected?
A mistake is a mistake, and no mistake is better than some mistake, no?
Why aren't you thanking the people who correct you? Are they not means to making you fuller as a rational person?

Requesting this thread gets put into Randomness because it really has nothing to do with WoW in general, I can only foresee this getting worse and worse.

Well WoW is a game, I do not care to impress anyone on it. I want to have fun and make the most of my time on it. I spell drood wrong on purpose...do you know? Because I can, end of story. Really why do you want to correct my spelling / grammar over a game? You should know nobody listens to advice over the internet. Yes I do normally try to correct myself if I spelled something wrong or had a typo, but I do not want someone else's help or advice and I do not care to have their advice.

I see more people with English as their second, third, or even
fourth
language with spelling and grammar far superior to people who's primary (and often only) language is English. How is that not a problem worth addressing?
I swear a lot of society's problems are because everyone's afraid to correct anyone else. That carebear mentality is going to be the end of us one of these days. A problem uncorrected usually gets worse instead of solving itself.

I spent a lot of time on the holy paladin sticky in the forums, and I KNOW it's up to date, so put that to the side.
Someone comes on the paladin forums saying 'hay hwo i heal gud' and several things are obvious:
1) They did not take the time to do any of their own research first. And I'm not talking about reading 90 page threads on EJ (although that would help them), I'm talking about opening your eyes wide enough to notice there's a thread that says 'read before posting' at the top of the page. This shows a lack of respect.
2) This tells me that they either a) have absolutely no concept that this information might be out there, somewhere, or, much more likely, b) they simply don't give a damn and want us to find it for them. This shows a lack of respect.
3) They didn't bother to even try any sort of spellchecking, or double checking that their post was grammatically correct, or making sure their question would be easily understood. It doesn't occur to this person that when you ask someone for help you the only polite thing to do is be very clear and concise with what you want because you're already taking up their time, and you want to minimize the chance to waste it. This shows a lack of respect.
So by the end of a post like that it's clear to me that they assume that internet people are some kind of half-machine servant to them. That we don't care if we have to repeat ourselves, do other people's research for them, or try to interpret and guess at what they want, and that we don't care because - and here's what gets me - the poster probably doesn't really think there's a human that they should have any respect for in any way on the other end of the screen. And I always treat people with as much respect as I feel I'm given. If you treat me as barely human, I'm not taking the time to be polite or helpful.
Believe it or not, I don't get a rush from being a jerk to strangers, nor do I get a rush from proving I'm more intelligent than strangers because I memorized how to spell better than them. I get a rush from being shown basic respect. The trend towards blaming everything anonymity is a brilliant example of this in action. 'I can't possibly be showing them anything less than respect with my half-assed opinions. Therefore if someone is mean it must be that they have severe personality problems.' You're dehumanizing the person you direct that towards, and you aren't showing any respect. Of course they dislike you.

It's the interwebz where everyone feels they are superior to everyone else and are so used to their automatic fixing programs on their programs they don't care about spelling anymore.
As for the Stickies thing; if more people read them, you wouldn't see threads that are just one or two replies.

Yet if said person were to post on the original blue cheese board they get accused of necroing an old topic.
Very interesting.
That is one kind of snarkiness that does bother me, but again, trace the cause back and you'll find it isn't anything to do with a person's predilection towards being an awful human. There's a general internet stigma towards necroing threads, but Wowhead's opinion of them is pretty unclear. Mods will come in and lock some necros, and lock some new threads saying 'go necro thread x.' Put an explicit policy in the 'Welcome to the Wowhead Forums!' thread, give it a few weeks, and I guarantee that'll go away.

eye korekt peepel wen it iz obvius they dident tri.
My OCD made that sentence hurt my brain.
I spent thirteen years of school being taught proper spelling and grammar. Thirteen years of education is not easily forgotten. In-game chat is one thing. I'll overlook capitalization (unless Caps-Lock is on, that's just annoying). I'll overlook punctuation if I can still understand the thought without re-reading it twice. On the forum, you can pause and read your post; I am less lenient on forums.
I tend to correct to/too/two. It changes the thought of the sentence.
I tend to correct they're/their/there. It changes the thought of the sentence.
I tend to correct Rouge/Rogue. It changes the thought of the sentence.
I correct people not out of a tendency for superiority, but more a reflex of being corrected on those mistakes in school. The English language can evolve, but I will refuse to speak or type the bastard offspring of the Internet's desire for speed and people's growing laziness of trying to be "correct."
