The New Mastery system is meant to help with the tanking talents, as well as Path and the other things. It's going to be nice that not every tank will be cookie cutters of each other and all have the same armour for once.
Haha, that's not going to happen. You forget that WOW is a game of elitists, period. There will be "the best spec/mastery bonus" the "best set of armor" and "the best gemming/enchants" just like there has always been. People on these games are always looking for an edge over pve and pvp content and will experiment endlessly to find it.
Cataclysm only changes how we get to be uncrittable, and how stats work, it won't suddenly change the tanking/dps/healing culture of WOW.
People will always work to find the best stuff in WOW and not settle until they find it. And then they'll argue endlessly on forums such as these to prove their right.
:D
Aye of course, but right now, in my guild, myself and two of the other tanks all have roughly the exact same spec; not because we planned it or looked it up to be the elite of the elite... but because it is the best for tanking and threat.
I'm of the hope that Cata will change that, and people won't be clones of each other.

If Catalysm kills tanks I wonder who will tank for me...
If Catalysm kills healers I wonder who will heal me...
I think Catalysm will kill dps, since they are going to have to do everything the tanks and healers used to do!
Good thing I just leveled a warlock, I'm gonna love to solo this expansion
;o
Seriously, how can anyone think of the Catalysm changes as a bad thing... For once I might get to enter an instance as dps on my hybrids

I just read the stat changes for cataclysm, and it seems tanks get the short end of the stick. All tank gear is being reduced in stamina, and armor is going down alot too. Blizzard says that tanks health will be similar to every other class, so this means a mage will have as much health as a tank, which shouldn't be right, I think tanks get the short end of the stick on this one and blizzard really #$%^ed them over.
You will ALWAYS need tanks for pve. Blizzard will never make pve impossible so if all tanks are on the same page and blizzard will never make pve impossible that means they are not killing tanks at all just changing them.

One way of looking at the new changes, and I'm not saying i'm right, is that with dps and healers generally having closer to the same health as tanks then before, it could mean that blizz will be designing raids to have much, much more raid damage. It
may
mean having a single healer spamming a tank could be gone.
I don't know. It's just a thought.

Always good to see that people have spotted flaws in the plans that Blizzard have been devising for years; I'm sure they totally forgot that tanks need survivability with these changes. You're so smart! S-M-R-T!
Sensible hat on, for crying out loud, wait until at least the basics are known (no, what we have so far does not qualify as "the basics") before crying that tanks have been shafted. Blizzard know the game better than you, never forget that.

That's what they want to expand on.
OP, yes. Thousands of tanks will die in Cataclysm.

Guess what?
The same company that is designing the stats in WoW is also designing the dungeons and raids! Who woulda thunk it?

What, exactly, would stop a Ret Pally from popping Righteous Fury, and declaring he is a tank? Technically the new 'tank' gear would actually fit in well with ret pallies, ret focuses mainly on strength anyway
This is
precisely
Blizzard's intent with Cataclysm. There is a shortage of tanks for 5-mans, but generally not for raids. They intend to design it so dps warriors/paladins/DKs/feral druids can tank 5-mans effectively just by changing stance/presence, etc and throwing on a shield (where appropriate), without having to respec or get a full tank set. Raids will be tuned to require fully raid specced and geared tanks however.
Of course whats going to happen is that people will work out that their 5-man badge runs will go quicker if they have a raid tank, so this is what people will start expecting and demanding, and we'll be right back to where we are now.
