I don't care about swear words (gets filtered anyway), but I always report & ignore harassment, racism, sexism etc. It happens way too much.
FoShizzle8, some of us actually use Trade chat for, y'know, trading.

I agree that there are a wide range of responses. And, that we don't need to report everything. You can have an in-PUG dispute, for instance. And some of those can get a little nasty. I'll try to reason with people... and ocassionally, I'll get a little hotheaded myself. (But, I set a line for myself on what is and is not okay)
However? I pay $30/mo (for my wife and myself), and don't need to put up with obscenities towards my wife, or harassing behavior of any kind.
Cases in point?
#1: Getting ready to make a PUG for an instance in Outland, one guy found out my wife was a "real woman", and started making comments like, "Is she your little b*tch? Does she do X?" She was the tank, so when we decided to leave (and report them) this guy and his friend were high 'n dry.
#2: Just today, in Orgrimmar. Bumped into an ex-guildie, who was booted, brought back in on a provisional basis, and then booted again, for abusive language and treatment of others. I hadn't been involved, but I'd put him on /ignore for a long time, while he was in the guild.
He /emoted some nasty things to me -- fine -- and then started in with, "F*ck you.", "I hope you die." and it only got worse from there. I told him this was harassment. He mocked me, and basically laughed at the idea that I had any recourse. So, I reported him.
Like I said, I don't need to put up with this stuff. And I definitely won't tolerate anything towards my wife. Blizzard knows that they have a vested interest in disciplining people who treat others badly, and make the game into something other than a fun experience. (Because, unhappy customers become non-paying customers) Better to suspend or expell one bad apple, than risk the loss of ten other, nice players.

Really it comes back to the good old line "It's your $15 p/month"...
The people who are offended by bad behaviour are already reporting/ignoring/making GM tickets. People who couldn't give a rats rear end about it, well, they will keep on not giving a rats rear end.
But if everyone started creating a ticket everytime someone done something that was a slight violation of the ToS or EULA, then there would be a mass suicide among GM's...
This is my problem with it. There are already excessive wait times anytime you submit a ticket. If someone uses profanity in trade, and is reported by the majority of the people who see it, then suddenly you've got 1000+ tickets flooding the queue, all for the same issue. All of a sudden, the folks who
must
have the assistance of a GM (for instance, guild bank hacks, quest bugs, etc.) to resolve their problem are stuck in queue behind people who had another method of recourse (i.e., /ignore).
We already have an option to report people for spamming. Why not simply put in another option, such as "Report profanity"? At least then it's likely just flagging the person's account, and results in a single instance of multiple reports, rather than multiple reports of a single violation.

Maybe this is just me, but if the GMs are overworked, trimming their responsibilities isn't exactly the first thing that pops into my mind as a way to remedy the situation. It's Blizzard's product; if they fail to police it, it only reflects badly on them.
I understand your sentiment. Blizzard could probably hire more GMs and it wouldn't hurt their profit that much. However, does it seem likely to you that it's going to happen?
I would be willing to bet that Blizzard knows that /trade is full of trash talk and adolescent humor; all they have to do is log in for 10 minutes on any heavily-populated server. So they know that it's going on. To me, that says they've looked at the situation and determined that the viability of a GM force sizable enough to police a "clean" general chat would be unfeasible.*
I regularly look at wait times of 2-4 hours before I get a GM, and this is for more critical issues like reporting bank hacks. If every person reported every instance of profanity or crudeness that occurred in trade, we would be looking at a minimum wait time two to three times as long as right now (as a wild guess).
In my old guild, we had a couple with younger son who played WoW. They handled the issue themselves: Their son had all general chat channels disabled, and could not see guild chat; he was not allowed on Vent unless they were present, and he was not allowed to group with random people.
It should not be Blizzard's sole responsibility - or even primarily their responsibility - to protect kids from the profanity in general chat - and I definitely would not support it at the expense of an increase over the already lengthy wait times for GM service.
*That, or they don't care, which is possible as well.
