Incidentally, you (and all of us who play) accepted the ToS to not engage in harassment, vulgarity, yadda yadda. If someone decides to actually enforce that rule, that's your own fault for breaking it.
Incidentally, this has nothing to do with the moral arguement you were attempting to make, I take it you've decided to concede that particular point?
And I have never even done anything that would require that rule to be enforced, I just think you trying to make an arguement from morals about it is really really silly.

The point of the OP's post was to let others know that it is well within their rights to report things they consider to be harassment and/or vulgar.
Then it would be a useless post, everyone knows that. But that's not the point of the OP (or, it seems, your posting it this topic), it's point is that:
A) The poster thinks we should be morally obligated to not swear etc
and
B) The poster thinks we should be morally obligated to report anyone not adhearing to A) for several reasons.
Which quite frankly, seems to me like a futile and silly exercise.

If you don't like the language or whatever you're seeing, that's what the profanity filter is for.
I'd like to point out for the 1,545th time that the existence of the Mature Language Filter does not give anyone the right to publicly use profane language.
"Oh, no, someone used language that I don't personally approve of. Even though it wasn't meant to offend me, I'm going to get this person banned."
Take your censorship elsewhere. Instead of getting honest people banned for using language
you
think should be censored, let's make the mature language filter required for those who sign up with an age under a certain number that your type deems agreeable. I vote 18, since that's what you people aim for.
The FCC is nothing more than censorship that America deems "appropriate." It's nothing more than a dumbed-down version of what China and like nations have.
If you want your damn kid to be ""safe"", why don't you shelter them from the outside, including home-schooling them and keeping anything fun away from them. We'll see how
so
much better your child is after 18 years of solitary confinement from society. I feel sorry for your children.

I can understand where the op is coming from but, the sad fact is, we play a game on.....
THE INTERNET !
Blizzard can ban god knows how many people but the reality is that where one stood, another will stand. If blizz banned or took action against every complaint registered the game would be called 'Watch what you say' and people would leave. I know i would and i rarely have much to say over public chat.
If you access a game which is basically a massive interactive version of facebook where you smack ogres instead of posting piccys of your latest drunk night out you must expect that the game will follow trends similar to other web based media.
I work for the police in the UK and we have constant reports of harrassment / abuse / inappropriate comments etc through forums, chat rooms and, low and behold, mmo's.
The general consensus - if you dont like that someone can pop up online and make there mouth go, dont log in.

Maybe it's just me, but I feel that there's a wide range of responses varying from the overly politically-correct "report everything" crowd to the "It's my right to say what I want and treat people how I want" group.
In my opinion, one of society's problems today is that there seems to be a level of apathy when it comes to enforcing social norms. Should a person be allowed to swear? It depends on context. If you're in a group of your peers, if everyone accepts the way you speak, then sure. If you want to go to a McDonald's, call the person serving you the N word, then no. It's not acceptable.
In World of Warcraft, we have a profanity filter. For the most part, I will ignore (not /ignore) any chat which is in the &^&&%%@! filter. However, when I see blatant racism in chat, or someone intentionally decides to show how cool he is by bypassing the filter, I report it. I can /ignore the idiots, but that doesn't teach them that negative behaviour has negative ramifications. Report spam, as far as I can see, doesn't really get much response from GMs. However, when I put in a ticket saying that 'at x time, x player started using racist slang' and include copy-pasted text, that person tends to get a few days' break from the game- hopefully teaching them a valuable lesson about appropriate public behaviour at the same time.
If you think you shouldn't have to care about how other people will respond to asinine acts or comments in a public chat channel, then I think I shouldn't have to care when the GMs give you a spanking for it.

A word like the F-bomb..shouldn't be bothered with..even though in my guild I have rule that states if you don't have the intelligence to complete a sentence without using a vulgarity then find yourself another guild. As a gm I ask my members to practice good behavior and be a positive contributor to the realm.
But perhaps what the OP maybe talking about are the obscene images that players write on our realm chats that just go to far. The other day there was someone on my server who was pretty much saying stuff that would have made your skin crawl. I don't even want to repeat it..it was that bad. This person was pretty much daring everyone do anything about it. Maybe what Blizz needs is for some bad press to get out about what is being said in front of minors for them to finally step up and employ realm monitors. For the kind of money they make..enforcing their own rules of conduct shouldn't be considered an expense..but an investment.

I don't agree or approve of the OP's message at all. While I do think that people should be respectful of others and that vulgarity has no place in WoW or even normal use, I think that people should be able to be mature enough to ignore such language. I may find a comment offensive ("Christians are all hypocritical and bad and judgmental") but there is no reason for that to ruin my day. Even somebody that is straight up trying to be profane and vulgar is no reason to throw a fuss.
The simple fact of the matter is: I honestly, truly
do not care
what people say on teh internetz. If Blizzard wants to censor that, more power to them. But keep in mind that, not only does Blizzard make the rules, they enforce the rules (or not, as the case may be) as well. If GMs were really interested in cleaning up Trade they could. They already have access to all chat logs.
Perhaps, they only censor as much as the particular population of a server wants it. I.E. on RP servers, if people REALLY want everybody to stick with lolarpee-ish names, they can report the offending name and the player will be forced to change it. I would imagine that the same is true of offensive language - if you truly feel the need to be your server's Thought Police, then by all means go ahead. Blizzard is on your side.
Or people could just grow up and get some thicker skin.

Just to clairify...I don't really have a problem with profanity as long as it's not directed in hostility to another player. For example, saying "F$*#! yeah, we killed the Lich King!", I don't mind and don't report that. But saying "F@@! you noob!" is not OK in my book. It's the hostility and meanness being conveyed rather than the words themselves that are used.
Maybe I'm just old-fashioned, I simply don't like rudeness and discourtesy, and if there's a way I can reduce the prevalence of that, I will. :}It would take an order of magnitude more on the "offensive scale" for me to consider reporting somebody.
If somebody was to start a tirade against homosexuals, Jews, blacks, etc. I would report it. But unless they are making comments that are just over the top and vulgar and they are truly trying to attack other players on a personal level I don't think it's worthy of GM involvement.
Besides, "^&*! you noob" is simply shorthand for "I sincerely hope that you are new to this game, because your lack of skill and knowledge of the basic mechanics of your class reveal that you are completely clueless. You should probably have read the game manual before you installed WoW." Now which would you rather type out?

Ugh, if Blizzard implemented something like that... I would consider leaving WoW just on principle.
