Hello, Wowheaders! I come to you today to preach the joys of vegetarianism. Mainly out of boredom, but also because I love being a vegetarian and I think many people (and of course animals) could benefit from a meat-free diet.
So, to start, I bring up the point of health. Approximately 64% of Americans are overweight or obese.
~129,600,000
Americans
are obese. I, for one, think this should be fixed. A study done and mentioned on the same page says, "'Actual Causes of Death in the United States, 2000,' finds that 400,000 deaths in the U.S. in 2000 (17 percent of all deaths) were related to poor diet and physical inactivity. Only tobacco use caused more deaths (435,000)." This could easily be changed if Americans were eating less meat.
No, it could easily be changed if obese Americans were eating less meat. I'm not obese, my friend isn't obese, so us not eating meat would not change any death toll.
One year on a strict vegetarian diet can reduce your cholesterol by up to 24.3% says
OxfordJournals
.
Vegetarian diets are high in fiber, vitamins C and E, magnesium, and other nutrients, as well as low in saturated fat says
Wikipedia
.
Vegetarians are also proven to live, on average, 10 years longer, as well as suffer from less heart problems.
On average. I have no heart problems or any serious health concern, not to mention that I like living with quality not quantity. So this really doesn't affect me.
Much more information on health benefits of a vegetarian diet can be found
here
.
If the incentive of a healthier life is not enough, maybe it will help you to know that by eating meat you are essentially reducing the amount of people in the world that can be fed. David Pimentel says "If all the grain currently fed to livestock in the United States were consumed directly by people, the number of people who could be fed would be nearly 800 million."
There are roughly 300 million people in the U.S. This shows that Americans are eating almost 3 times of what they could be eating on a vegetarian diet. By going vegetarian, you are feeding three more people that would have gone hungry. If saving three peoples' lives while making your own life healthier (and also
helping the environment!
) is still not a good enough reason, it may help you to know...
Actually, in an ideal world this would be true. But it's not. How much of said grain would actually go to the hungry? Not much. Also, whether or not I buy the meat off the shelf, the meat will still be on the shelf. I'm making the animals death have purpose at least.
This
is what you eat. (Kids don't look; Though this really helps some people in their decision.)
And
this.
(May be disturbing to some people, so don't look at unless you are still thoroughly unconvinced about vegetarianism.)
I only eat free range organic meats, so most of those are not actually applicable to me. Also, as dirty as your meat gets, if it's not harming me physically then it does not affect me. This looks like a cheap stab at the weak human mind. Though I do agree that the animals deserve a little more than this.
Anyway, I think it'd be really cool if I convinced at least one person to stop eating meat or even just slow down their meat consumption. If I don't convince anyone I'll do this over again because I purposely left off many points ;)
Thanks for taking the time to read this (assuming you did), and thanks for curing my boredom, Wowhead, by having somewhere where I can type to whoever.
I respect vegetarians for having more restraint then me, but you cannot convince everyone and thus the animals will die.
And I'm guessing you've never tasted bacon. It is @#$%ing delicious.

Uh, leaving the meat to the shelf will cause meat-producers to see their sales go down, and they'll respond by producing less meat.
Maybe if a significant amount of people thought like that, but just me alone would not.
So until I am convinced that I would actually save anything, I'm not gonna give up ma baconz.

BACON IS RULE!
No seriously, I don't eat much meat, except for pork pretty much, its mainly grains for me. But the sale of meat isn't really going down because I'm not buying it.

Ya we really need to treat the animals a bit better. I always figured eating meat was the natural way humans are supposed to eat, seeing as how we have been doing it since as long as we can remember.
@Victory, not if you do it right
In the Bible everyone was vegetarian in the Beginning, so apparently it wasn't natural at first.
however, iron deficiency anaemia is rare no matter the diet.
You're seriously playing the card? Like... Really dude? That just lost you like all of my respect. That's the equivalent of saying "I believe that all of these people need to be enslaved, because the flying spaghetti monster said so." To any one who believes in the flying spaghetti monster, this is a completely credible source. However, to someone of questioning faith, this is perhaps the worst argument presentable.

...Which is why I'm posting this on the internet-- So a significant amount of people will see it. Also read my steak on Monday example please, and share the logic with your friends ha =P
Yes, but how many of us are you actually going to convince? I'd say out of the maybe one hundred at most people who read this, you'd be incredibly lucky to convince one. Why should you prevail where so many have failed.

So let me get this: You think eating meat is bad, but you're not stopping since it wouldn't have any effect if you stopped eating meat. But you still think eating meat is bad, and you only approve your own meat consumption?
Do you know how much meat does one eat during 10 years?
I never said eating meat is bad. This is all hypothetical. Plus, if we're talking about over ten years, every piece of meat I would have bought would have been bought by someone else, so even so my point stands.
