They value things that aren't even real. Some would say, some users prefer that virtual experience to the real one.How is one objectively superior to the other? If living in a virtual world helps me get through the real one, who are you to judge me?

The same could be said about faith, but I know that didn't work out very well for you.
Also: On the value of WoW gold, it's really no more real the cash, especially in the digital age. That paper twenty dollar bill isn't any more 'real' in value then WoW gold, it's just about who will accept it as currency.

Back in the Depression, the banks could close down and that would be it. Your money would be gone. There are laws against that now, but still.

The same could be said about faith, but I know that didn't work out very well for you. .Difference is, I know which one is the real world when it comes to video games.
Real is important for one reason. Because what it's what give human life value. If something is virtual... say.. an accomplishment or a feeling... like imagine virtual "love". The idea for many is affront to what makes us human. Being human is about what is real. That's not necessarily true. For one thing, we live in an age that teeters on the age of artificial persons, where "love" might exist between two people that some people would consider virtual.
Hell, I've encountered fictional characters that I damn near fell in love with. I understood that they were fictional characters the whole time, but the feeling was "real."
If you want to get technical, everything we perceive as "real" is actually a detailed virtual model that is constructed by our brains and based on the data our senses feed it. "Red" is merely a wavelength as light, and the "color" that your brain gives it is purely arbitrary. Likewise, the sound that your brain gives a guitar riff is just a virtual label that is given to a particular sine wave.
In my worldview, at least, reality only has as much value as its observers give it. I think the moon is beautiful, but I understand that it is not any more valuable because it is "real" than if it were a beautiful painting of the moon. Video games that have beautiful scenery, or fantastic writing, or intriguing characters can have the same effect, and I am no less impressed due to their lack of reality than if they were real.
In addition, there is the escapism of it. In real life, while I find the universe as a whole wonderful and fantastic, my own personal experiences are more frequently than not tedious, painful, and boring. That's not because I lack passion, but because of my circumstances.
Games like Mass Effect or WoW let me inhabit the body of a person with a more interesting life, where not only are the consequences less serious, but you can have a do-over if you screw up, and nobody will judge you (well, unless you're a raider or PvPer :P). In the case of Mass Effect, I modeled my character after myself, so I can almost literally live out a more interesting and exciting story than the one I find myself in in real life. And I don't think anyone should be able to tell me that's objectively wrong.
