People are just dumb went it comes to tanks. They all think that a new lvl 80 tank should be over 30k health unbuffed. But they fail to remember the Naxx days and some of the old raids when the health pool was very low.
I have a tankadin and I mostly pug with my guild do to the dps that I get screwed with in randoms. It seems to me that there is always 1 in the group that tries to cause a wipe because they pull and extra mob or start attacking before you have the aggro. I have seen all class do this its not just one class that does it.

3) The general attitude displayed at the moment is zero-tolerance for inexperience. A new tank that genuinely wants to learn will likely be put off by the terrible attitude they will recieve from a group when they make a mistake, small or otherwise.
4) Some tanks are getting fed up with impatient DPS screaming go go go at them and trying to pull for them, so queue as DPS instead. This is a much less stressful route that leads to a lessened blood pressure.
These.

I'm quite worried about my future Warrior tank as well.
I'm 68, and aiming to get to 80 to pug raids, and tank whatever.
Seems like, if people aren't at a certain hp level, or no achievements, you won't get in.
One can only rely on randoms to get badges.
I'm not a bad tank, I'm sure there is a lot more to learn, but I'm cautious with pulls, and I don't lose aggro at 95% of the time.

I was just in gnomer on my alt and we had a warrior tank - our healer was a real ass and kept telling the tank to go faster -he put up a vote to kick the tank which was defeated and he left - another healer joined us and we finished the instance quite easily .
The tank continued to improve as we went along -asking us questions as he went ( we couldnt answer a lot of them as none of us had played a warrior before ) --now if we had voted to kick this guy he may not have continued to be a tank .
So everyone please give the tanks a break -- yes there are some idiots out there tanking - but its the same with every other spec . have patience and we may get more people who will take up tanking
No, no, no, hell no.
Is it really hard to punch in "How to tank" in google or something? Is it really hard to find a rotation, or read the tooltips?
Hell, anyone with half a brain can figure our the tooltips and arrange them in the right order.
Then there are apparently a whole lot of people out there with less than half a brain. Tanking is far more than learning a rotation and reading tooltips. I'd like to see someone jump into tanking on, say, Iron Council, having no experience at tanking but having read the tooltips.
Let's compare what the various roles in a group must do, shall we?
DPS
Stay out of anything on the ground, or anything falling from above, that causes damage
Stay away from any portion of the enemy that causes damage (head/tail/etc.)
Stop DPS when things like
Mirrored Soul
are used (they frequently fail at this anyway)
Pewpew
Healer
Stay out of anything on the ground, or anything falling from above, that causes damage
Stay away from any portion of the enemy that causes damage (head/tail/etc.)
Spam heals on the assigned target(s)
Tank
Stay out of anything on the ground, or anything falling from above, that causes damage
Stop DPS when things like
Mirrored Soul
are used
Use aggro-generating abilities at the right time to ensure that the DPS doesn't pop over tank threat
In many cases, use aggro-reducing abilities on DPS or healers to ensure that they don't pop over tank threat
Watch the health of every member of the party to ensure that they aren't getting beaten-on by an add, and taunt when necessary
Coordinate with another tank to separate mobs when necessitated by the fight
Know the appropriate paths for kiting when necessitated by the fight
Know when, where, and how to LoS mobs when necessitated by the fight
In short, DPS has it easy; healers are more difficult, but in most cases can focus on a handful of targets to heal; tanks, on the other hand, have to watch everything all at once and coordinate it all to make sure that, at the end of the fight, at the least he and a healer are still alive and the boss is dead.

Good DPS are rarer than good tanks on my server.
And no, DPS is far from easy.
Let's see what you left out shall we?
DPS need to watch their DOTs carefully and refresh them at the appropriate moments.
DPS will have to take all the &*!@ from other players because according to 90% of the WoW community, everything is their fault.
DPS will need to make sure to use the appropriate spells when they are on the move in certain fights.
I agree, I left out item 1. However, this also true for healers, with HoTs, and for tanks as well (bleeds, judgments, and diseases).
Item 2 is purely speculation; in my experience, healers get blamed far more often for wipes than DPS, but that still doesn't make it statistically sound. This isn't really a good point for argument because neither of us have the data necessary to determine the truth of the matter.
Item 3 is also true for healers. During a movement-heavy battle, healers have to rely primarily on HoTs and the rare instant-cast heal. It's also partially true for tanks, especially on fights where you must ensure that you've got a taunt available at the appropriate time.

Not going to lie- so tired of the anti-hunter stigma. I know how to play my class, and a lot of times the hunter gets blamed by default for whatever is going on.
Two days ago I was running HFoS with a tank from my guild that had recently been told he needed to figure out how to hold aggro, or he would not be allowed to tank for raids. It was a test run of his new spec, and I was the guinea pig.
I MD'd him on every pull, hit his marked targets, and feigned death every CD, but we were still haveing aggro issues. All of the DPS took heavy damage during the trash pulls, and i died like 3 times.
Last boss, tank loses aggro completely and it comes after me. It would have been ok, except i was also targeted by mirrored soul at the time and the warrior DPS wouldn't stop attacking, so i died.
After the wipe, the warrior says "That hunter is a f-ing retard" and i was vote kicked by him, the healer who stood in the storm during the first boss (not feared- just stood there) and died, and the dps pulling 2k less than I was. Needless to say, tank left too and they probably didn't get to finish their instance.
Moral of the story- it's very easy to try and blame party problems on one member or another, but usually it's a joint effort (most of the people in that run were making mistakes). And a lot of times, it's hard to know exactly what went wrong just from the numbers. Was it poor aggro from tank, bad heals, dps that didn't know how to moderate?
And, if you have decided after an extensive tanking career that has lead u all the way up to Wailing Caverns (leet stuff) that it is always the hunter's fault that you wipe, you have no business tanking, and the low level newbies who weeded you out have done everyone a favor.

I'd say that - combining my opinion and the above comments - the reason there are few tanks is that:
a. there are fewer tank-specs than dps-specs, so relatively fewer tanks;
b. most people don't level as tank. Leveling is mostly a solo-thing and can be done quicker in a dps spec;
c. continuing b: most people will have to learn to tank at higher levels and considering the unpleasant attitude on LFD (generally speaking) they won't get a chance to learn.
YMMV, of course
ad c. Most lfd groups assume that everyone knows the dungeon by heart. The complaining when someone acts like he's new (because he is), is enough to put some people off. I've started setting up runs for me and my guildies in normals with a few experienced players so the newbies can learn the dungeons and can then try lfd with some confidence.
I don't need to be told I don't know what I'm doing when I don't know what I'm doing. I know that. I need to be told what is happening and what to do. Reading wowhead and watching youtube is not enough to learn a dungeon.

Tanking is also the most stressful of all the three roles in the game.
When im on my dps, all I have to worry about is doing as much dos as possible and staying out of bad stuff.
On my healer, I have to make sure every one is alive and also stay out of bad stuff.
On my tank, I have to worry about controlling the mobs, make sure they dont get on the healer or any dps, time my defensive CDs so I dont slaughtered, watch out for any other incoming mobs, etc...
