It's your only way to stop instant casts in pvp. As for how important it is .... stopping a HOT when your target is at less than 20% is just .... nifty.

Frost=pvp
fire=pve
Please stop saying this. This is a rediculous statement (if I may call it one), that should stop.
PvP is more about burst damage than anything. From the frost tree, all you need for PvP is Elemental precision and improved frost nova to do well as a fire spec in PvP. There are more high damage instant/fast cast spells in fire than in frost.
I could actually say fire=PvP and frost=PvE with just as much reasoning as you can say, well, something that you just read once and take as a fact.
How long do mages really stay alive during PvP? You need crowd control, instant casts and keep in mind that spamming frost bolt in PvP is silly, because in arena, people just cancel your spell casting by going behind an obstacle and in BG, you are usually getting hit by 2+ melee classes or being feared. You want to get as much damage out as fast as possible, and fire/arcane will do that better.
One of the biggest reasons that people went with Frost for PvP at one time is because Ice block was a talent, but since it was changed into a purchased skill, it's no longer an issue. Ice Barrier and Icy veins are the only talents I see a need for past the first tier, which might not make much of a difference.

alright you are partially correct the only circumstance where you could be fire in pvp is in BG's NOT arena. Any arena team Frost is the only way to go. as for PVE you can go frost if you have a big raiding guild, and already have fire mages, and if your a noob. For PVE really the only spec you should be is either Arcane or Fire. (a little up the frost tree for icy veins is good)
also directly to Sgt. Pain. read my sig. the point of frost is not to do instant damage but to survive. the longer you are alive the more damage you do. Also you don't spam frost bolts. Here is what you do. nova, ice lance, pet nova, ice lance, coldsnap, nova, ice lance, petnova, icelance. or your own variation similar to that. learn your class atleast before you try to teach others. notice pretty much every pvp mage is frost. it's that way for aa reason
I stated that Spamming frost bolt in PvP is silly, so I never said spam frost bolt.
The reason why most PvP mages are frost is because that is the trend. Frost dominated PvP for a long time, but due to changes made to the game, mostly in 2.3, frost being the only PvP spec is now in the passed. You are using knowledge and examples of frost mages that are outdated. Blizz made these changes so that players no longer HAD to be frost to do well in PvP.
