HSR, you just completed an about-turn in the space of one page.

A lot of 'good' people did 'bad' things in the Bible. That doesn't make the bad things any more right.
Edit: Just to clarify - just because someone in the Bible did something bad doesn't mean that God considers such actions acceptable.

Too much God in this thread. It was meant to be a thread about morals, not religion.

Excuse me if I misread your "Because God says so" comment. It distinctly lacked any hint of cynicism.

Just because you separate the two, doesn't mean everyone does.

What's wrong with that comment? My morality is a necessary structuring of the world proceeding directly from God.

Buddhists are probably the most moral people in the world, but if the Christian religion is true, they won't be going to heaven.
Depends.

Holy crap you got in quick. I deleted that almost as soon as I posted it.

If your statement is true, they aren't going to heaven.
Good thing you didn't show your work.

A lot of 'good' people did 'bad' things in the Bible. That doesn't make the bad things any more right.
Edit: Just to clarify - just because someone in the Bible did something bad doesn't mean that God considers such actions acceptable. But when it explicitly says that such actions are held acceptable by God, I think that's different.
Exd 1:15 Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of one was Shiphrah and the name of the other Puah;
Exd 1:16 and he said, "When you do the duties of a midwife for the Hebrew women, and see them on the birthstools, if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live."
Exd 1:17 But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the male children alive.
Exd 1:18 So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, "Why have you done this thing, and saved the male children alive?"
Exd 1:19 And the midwives said to Pharaoh, "Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women; for they are lively and give birth before the midwives come to them."
Exd 1:20
Therefore God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and grew very mighty.
Exd 1:21
And so it was, because the midwives feared God, that He provided households for them.

You should have elaborated more.
Anyone reading that little sentence would come to the conclusion that you are somewhat on God's side. So they would respond in a certain way. But by leaving it like that you laid a trap in which you could pounce on them later on and debunk them!

And I don't even need to bold it because you already did it for me!
Why did he reward them? Because they feared God (because killing babies makes God mad). Not because they lied. It's the Harry Potter dilemma: he breaks the rule by flying on his broom, but still ends up getting on the team...not because he broke the rule, but for some other reason.

Well because I am an
Explicit Positive Atheist
, it is my view that no-one is going to heaven.
At least not after they die

Yes... I'm very much on his side. So why is it bad that my sentence implies that?

God doesn't prefer anything.
God does reward those who avoid evil though.

At least not objectively.
You know what, I've provided an ass-load of Bibilical references already. Now it's your turn. Show me where in the Bible it says "Lying is evil, no matter what."
