Only if you could gain 100% crit would crit be better than spell power
Yeah, you pretty much did. Go take some aspirin & lick some windows.

You can't trust crit.
Yeah, you pretty much did. Go take some aspirin & lick some windows.
I've pretty much overdosed on them already. its 18.12 here in lovely birmingham, England. It's snowing, the heating isn't working at work and the woman i just spoke to had the breath of a hampsters arse hole. It's not a great day for me kind.
It's actually the other way around. If I were to create a profile with nothing but Haste/Spirit/Spellpower/Hit gear -- absolutely zero crit -- then Crit would be worth more than any other stat for the purposes of increasing DPS because of the diminishing returns thing we've started inching towards discussing. However, in that circumstance, an equal gear set with a balance of Crit/Haste/Spellpower would give a higher DPS output, even if the items were taken from the same tier.
At 100% crit chance, more crit is worth 0 PP, because you can't go beyond 100% chance to crit.
this makes sense. I'm gonna go back to playing insanaquiarium now...

I have 3000 SP, my Holy Fire hits for 2970 normal and 4450 crit.
I add 50 SP and my Holy Fire hits for 3000 normal and 4500 crit.
These 50 SP just increased my damage by 1% and 1.1% respectively.
Now, instead of adding 50 SP, I add 50 crit rating, which gives me 1.1% crit and therefore increases overall damage by 1.65%
40% chance to crit means you will AVERAGE 40 crits per 100 hits.
So lets put this into perspective of Crit vs SP.
+50 SP will cause a CONSTANT increase across ALL of those 100 hits including the Crits.
+50 Crit will cause on AVERAGE 1, YES, 1, SINGLE extra crit.
So will the extra ONE likely crit be more than the constant increase across 100 hits ?
Well lets look at your example for that one single spell & it's averages with an input of 40% crit.
Base ( 2970 damage * 60 hits + 4450 damage * 40 Crits ) = 356,200*
+50 SP ( 3000 damage * 60 hits + 4500 damage * 40 Crits ) = 360,000*
+50 Crit ( 2970 damage * 59 hits + 4450 damage * 41 Crits ) = 357,680*
*This is the avaerage damage output over 100 hits with the info you gave.
So lets apply some subtraction....
+50 SP will net you 3,800 extra damage over 100 hits.
+50 Crit will net you 1,480 extra damage over 100 hits.
Yes at some point X Crit will be greater than Y Spellpower.
But, and here is the kicker POINT FOR POINT 1 SP > 1 Crit.
If you want to know the exact ratio of when crit will give a greater AVERAGE return in damage over SP you need something like SimCraft, or lots of time with nothing better in life to do.... I'll stick with the basic & let simcraft figure out the details. My guess would be somewhere around 2:1 or 3:1. IE 2 Crit >= 1 SP.
I won't say you're wrong, but I do believe I'll take 3,800 extra damage over 1,480 extra damage.

While the Crit priest has higher chance to crit with every single DoT.
1 DoT Crit: +50%
2 DoT Crit: +100%
3 DoT Crit: +150%
4 DoT Crit: +200%
5 DoT Crit: +250%
6 DoT Crit: +300%
So it might to be possible for the Crit priest just requires to crit 1 time to over come the SP priests flat dmg.
That is the problem the chance of that happening is extremely low, even with a 50% crit chance your chance of getting that many crits in a row diminishes. Again if you understood stats, gambling, etc. you would realize that.
Chance for crits in a row.
1: 50%
2: 25%
3: 12.5%
4: 6.25%
5: 3.125%
6: 1.5625%
if you don't believe it look up the math or flip a coin 1000 times & count how many times you get heads in a row & how many times you get tails in a row.
Yes the theoretical maximum output is greater, but the reality is that on AVERAGE over a real boss fight in a real raid, you will NOT achieve it, and can not sustain it.
