In the Cataclysm trailer it is clearly stated that the fight with the lich king goes on. It's somewhere at the start
Im pretty sure the Lich King is dead before the Cataclysm begins. Unless blizzard is going to pull a big one on us.

Aye, I think their implying that Cata rocks the world just as the final push into Icecrown is made.

So who does that leave us? *coughBOLVARcough*
Blovar dies at the end of the Return to angrathar questline. They show him dying in the cinematic and Varian gets pi$$ed off and attacks Thrall after the battle for the undercity.

He's back in Icecrown Citadel.

Although he isn't a boss he has an important role in ICC (don't ask me what I don't know!)

I don't quite understand why Blizzard is even claiming that the undead *need* a Lich King in any case. The Forsaken don't have the Lich King and although they were "saved" by Sylvanas and are perhaps shielded from his control by her they are not mind-controlled by her or the Lich King. So what's to stop the rest of the undead from coming back to their senses when the Lich King is destroyed? Or alternatively, if they all suddenly becoming ravening mindless undead when the LK's power is broken, would the Forsaken become insane as well?
See we're forgetting that the Forsaken and the Scourge are one and the same, simply under and not under the LK's control. So this double standard for what happens to each group when the LK is destroyed doesn't make a lot of sense.

Would go for the death knights as well; their technically dead after all, so if the undeath energy was going to make everything rampage, you'd think it would hit them as well.

The Forsaken are the strongest willed undead who hate the Lich King. THey were freed when the LK was losing his power, and now they are out for revenge, and are very strong minded to keep themselves away from him. And the Death Knight always had strong will. (on a side note I just saw a Forsaken warlock named baalzamon, wielding
Callandor
stormcaller
)

It might sound stupid, but after what the Forsaken pulled off at the Wrathgate when they killed the Horde and Alliance guys with the blight, I could see Sylvanas loving the chance to have the LK's power. It would after all make her hatred for the living a little easier to satisfy lol.
I'm a lore noob so if this was too retarded to even think about please disregard it.
Yeah... It was Putress and Varimathras that did that. THey staged a coup of the undercity, along with most of the undead and demon guard. Horde and Alliance soldiers led an attack on the city, where sylvanas and her soldiers killed varimathras and varian and his soldiers killed Putress. Then Varian declared war on the horde, and now the guards in UC are Kor'Kron overseers/

Lich king got corrupted by the sword frostmourne and he gained controll over the scourge by equiping the helm. Am I wrong?
In case so then nevermind.
So the new Lich King could use the helm and the armor and controll the scourge without being corrupted like Arthas was.
And frostmourne is possibly detroyed? ;)
Frostmourne is destroyed. But yes, it is the armor that grants control over the scourge, and the sword gives the LK most of his melee power, (such as frostmourne being unable to be parried)

Frostmourne consumes souls, which increased the power overall of the Lich King; but the actual entity is within the Armour and the Helm, the body that was Arthas's is nothing but a dead and dried out husk. If they don't cleanse the spirit inside the Armour, it's just going to take over the body of the new bearer, but it will take longer.
