There are addons that can break chat. Unfortunately I can't remember which ones usually caused this for me on patch days, so you'll have to go 1 by 1.
I'd check any chat mod first, followed by Questhelper and DBM. I tend to have the most issues with those, but it could be something else.

Also check and make sure your conversation bubbles are off. they may have been reset. there is a choice to have all ofwhat you type in chat, raid, guild, and party to show up above your head.
I believe this was added for role play, but either way - Id check under settings.
