Hi guys,
I recently started a Mage, levelling frost, as a side project to my main. I have decent (though short of great) experience with the game but this is my first time as a cloth wearer - and my first time playing as a caster (bar a short period as an ele shaman). I have to admit I cannot seem to even come close to winning an open-world duel or a 1v1 situation in any BG.
I would love to grab some tips from seasoned Mages who can perhaps see where my problems lie.
I'm currently lvl 54 and have just this minute been wiped aside by a lvl 49 warrior whilst out questing. The way he beat me, and the pattern of all my defeats, seems to be this : I begin by freezing my enemy with Nova....turn to get a bit of distance (out of melee range) and begin casting Frostbolt. I may get this first bolt away though often they have broken free of Nova and are back in my face as I'm still charging. I use blink to escape but I get chased down and as I run nothing I need seems to be on CD so I inevitably get killed whilst blindly panicking over what to do next. I feel Noca and Blink merely prolong my imminent death instead of being used to gain the upper hand.
I do intent to hit the BGs hard as the only way I'll learn this class well is by practice but as I fast approach Outland and all those fresh DKs I'd really appreciate some tips to help me get started.
Thanks!

The main thing to remember is speccing properly, frost has a lot of good talents for to improve survivability. At lv 54 you should already have ice barrier and specced 2/2 in making it a portable frost nova when its dispelled.
Always spot the target before they spot you, you have a chance on frostbolt to freeze them on the spot, from their continue to frostbolt them until they get to melee range, then use your instant spells, Fireblast and cone of cold followed by frost nova and blink, Turn around again and hit em with a volley of frostbolts.. And you always have iceblock to bide for time.

After charge, frost nova or wait for IB to explode. Summon Water Elemental. Keep moving.
When there's 4 or so seconds left on Nova, turn around and cast a Frostbolt. Start moving away instantly after you finish casting.
Blink out of Intercept. Start casting frostbolt, use water elemental freeze while casting. Shatter combo by following your Frostbolt instantly with Fire Blast. Start moving instantly after you're done casting.
Repeat from step 1....and KEEP MOVING

Don't forget that wonderful little spell called
Polymorph.
I'm surprised after so many responses, no one has said this yet.
Polymorph
, particularly in world PvP is a golden opportunity to take immediate control of the situation, and make up the rules as you go. How often do you wear your PvP trinket while questing? Other people rarely do as well.
If a class gets the jump on you, and you don't like where things are headed, turn 'em into a
sheep
, get some distance, and come back on top of your game, rather than frantically mashing buttons hoping to god they drop.
Sheeping a warrior serves little purpose other than when you need a reset to evocate/eat+drink to full, or to wait for CDs. Since they can charge in combat now, sheeping after a charge used to guarantee only having to deal with intercept, but that's no longer the case. It's better to use every GCD you have at your disposal to set up an opportunity where you can nuke as often as possible.
