I like it because it's
not
WoW.
It's hard to say that about most other MMOs.
Edit this is coming from someone who has held a paid subscription to
World of Warcraft
Age of Conan
Warhammer Online
Lord of the Rings Online
Dungeons and Dragons Online
Final Fantasy XI

Very true :)
Eh, have you heard of Runes of Magic, Basically a copy of WoW with rough edges.
Not a bad game but if you can afford a P2P game it's not worth the download hassles :()
Yep, theres absolutly nothing wrong with runes of magic. It's just a little rough around the edges, plus, it's free.

I wonder about this occasionally. And I think there are a few major reasons:
WoW has a history. Three Warcraft games (and one expansion) (not to mention the fact that StarCraft and Diablo, another two really successful games, belong to the same company. Yea, when a company has made about 10 games I've loved, chances are I will try their next creation) precede WoW - they were all well sold, and managed to create a nice context for WoW. Players going from Warcraft to WoW knew the world, knew the magic, knew some history. It didn't feel all knew and overwhelming, despite its large size.
WoW is huge. It's big, it's ambitious, it's got everything. All of its attributes might be at 7/10, there might not be a single thing that's 10/10, but there isn't one that's 6/10 or lower either. There might be nothing truly exceptional, but there isn't anything close to bad either.
Relaxed environment. There is a certain level of expected humor from WoW that I don't see in other games. Yes, it's all serious, and the story is realistic, and the characters are profound - but there is this little speck of humor that makes you chuckle when you see it. Yes, I am talking about the Easter eggs. They are a very nice way for players to connect and associate with the game.
It's been around. WoW kind of set the bar for MMORPGs and has kept it pretty high for the last 5 years. When a player starts some new MMO, they don't think "Gee, I wonder if this is the best MMORPG out there..." The question many of them ask is "I wonder if this is better than WoW". Because WoW is the base for comparison - it has a name.
Those are the biggies I think. I think there is something to be said about the communication between players and Blizzard. I don't think any other game has such large forum and so many fansites.

SWTOR should have a lot of what Argent has mentioned, so it might give WoW a run for it's money.

challenge
The music.
The WoW soundtrack is horrid. There are a few good tracks, but on the whole it's way below a 6.
Most MMOs have terrible music though, the only one I've ever been able to play unmuted is FFXI. It is also the game I rank highest, I just loves it.

I can't even believe you think that. The orchestral music Blizzard gets done for WoW is some of the best I've ever heard in a MMO, or a game, that's why I left it un-muted most of the time.

Just because other MMOs have crappy to no music doesn't mean WoW's "better" track of music makes it good. I just turn my music off because most of the WoW music is just pure garbage. Sound really doesn't seem to be a high priority for them. As big as WoW is, they should be able to get some musicians and design some boss music, better music for dungeons, etc.
If Nintendo can put together an epic theme for a battle that only lasts 20 seconds
, I'm sure Blizzard can afford to put together a boss theme that they can copy and paste to all their boss fights.

For once, I entirely agree with TheMediator.

Algalon? Yogg-Saron, 0 Lights? Anub'arak 25-Heroic? Soon the Lich King? Do not mistake the different difficulty levels with the lack of challenge at all.
I am willing to agree that the soundtrack does a relatively bad job at supporting fight scenes. But it doesn't even try - that's not its point. WoW's soundtrack provides themed background to the zones, not to specific short moments. I am pretty happy with the soundtrack. Entering Stormwind for the first time is one of my dearest moments in WoW.
Also, 7/10 was very arbitrarily chosen number...

Copout - to avoid taking responsibility for an action or to avoid fulfilling a duty.
Yes, that is exactly the damn point, the soundtrack lacks real action music besides the SFK/MC yada yada music, when the damn game revolves around action. I know you're supposed to support WoW and all, but really, the music is lacking; this is pretty much a fact.

You must be joking.
