So I just finished arguing with a guild mate of mine about Shadow Priests.
His point was basically that Shadow Priests die too fast in Arenas and Battlegrounds to be useful as DPS, and that Vampiric Embrace and Vampiric Touch are basically useless in PvE. He also claimed that our damage was outstripped by Mages and Warlocks specifically.
I countered that (and this is all from research not any experience yet since I just started playing and am only level 20) Shadow has fine survivability in PvP because of the extra Horror and Silence, and that VE and VT are both extremely useful to any raid that has Casters and Tanks (which would be all of them.) Poorly played Priests obviously die often no matter the spec (we are clothies after all) but with some practice, they could be deadly.
He was a bit of a prick about it, so I'm inclined to disregard what he said (he was so incredibly annoying that I actually /ignored him) but he got me thinking. How does Shadow do in PvE and PvP?
Shadow is as of right now one of the lower dps specs (soon to be fixed). Though pallies can keep replenishment up just a wee bit better than a priest, VE is amazingly helpful, constant healing while you dps a boss, yes please. No sane healer will hate to have you, plus spriests bring misery which helps dps stack other stats aside from hit.
As for pvp, VT bad? It does more damage if its dispelled, why is that bad?

Spriest does NOT die easily in Arena. They have two fears, a disarm and a silence, along with an "OH @#$%!" button which reduces all damage by 90% and makes them immune to stuns, silences and snares. Not to mention a passive -15% damage taken.
Also...VE and VT are useless in PVE? Your guildmate is either a pothead, or just knows absolutely NOTHING about priests. VT is one of Spriest's main damage spells, and also gives Replenishment to the raid, and VE gives the priest lots of self-healing, and a little bit of healing to their group. Quite the opposite of useless.
Sure, our DPS is on the VERY low side due to bad gear scaling, but that's changing in 3.3, with new haste scaling for our DoTs.
