[Bug?] Comments/answers structure

On
this
comments page, my comment (and a few others) which were originally answers to another comment are now appearing as separate comments above the comment they were replies to. The ordering of comments in general also seems odd (based on rating perhaps? that will disrupt the flow of the "conversation" in the comments sections).

Skosiris is working on it :)

We're actually experimenting with sorting comments by rating by default, effectively moving the most useful/funny/insightful/etc comments at the top.
I'm aware this can break "conversations", but I think seeing the useful info first is more important than seeing the conversations properly. Not that you can't change the sort mode if you want to see them.

Perhaps there would be a way to set the default by user? As in an option to set "Sort by date" or "Sort by rating" as your default.

That is what is coming soonly :)

Alright. I can live with it in general, but the larger problem here is that replies aren't attached to the comment they are replies to. Is that an intentional change? It's a lot more far-reaching than just sorting unattached or parent comments by rating, which I can live with (those "conversations" often end up broken by purges anyway, whereas a downrated parent comment would previously remain in minimized form as long as replies to it were positively rated).

They're sorted globally based on their rating, regardless of whether they're a reply or a standalone comment.
Basing the sort solely on standalone comments and attaching their replies behind each of them would defeat the purpose of sorting by rating... since comments would no longer be sorted by rating.

It also defeats the purpose of replying to another comment, since those comments will almost always be completely separated. And sometimes, replies are just necessary to correct or expand on information given in previous comments.

...at least, that's what this experiment is all about ;)

Alright. I appreciate the dialogue, though I still think there are some problems with the implementation you're testing right now. I'll give another example - for
this
page, the top rated comment simply states "it doesn't"... ¯\(°_o)/¯

You might want to call the previous setting "threaded" or something similar, then, because "by date" doesn't imply that the threads of conversation will be maintained, and that's the major reason to use "by date".
The current default is just... I dunno. Messy. Sloppy. The comments are extremely disjointed and difficult to read now. Skimming for green text was easy to do before, so I'm (personally) not seeing a benefit to the new default, but there's definitely a cost.
Lemme put it like this: the default setting should make the most sense to random new site visitors. With "by rating" you can only see the highest rating comments; the threads of conversation are complete gibberish. There's no way to tell the context of any comment at all. Like Sakkura said, some of the highest ratings are given to replies which are now meaningless. With "by date" a new user can still see the highest rated comments easily (cuz they're in green)
and
the threads of conversation are self-evident.

Maybe add an option Sort by Conversation - Highest Rated. It would add together the ratings for every reply and sort the Conversations based on this conversation rating (instead of post rating). This way you can see all the green posts but they are still organized in conversations.

I don't really like the sort by highest rating setting.
Let's say a bug that someone is commenting on may exist for several patches, then be fixed. At that point, the comment is highly rated, and the user has no intent on fixing it to reflect the change. Someone else replies to this comment saying that the bug has been fixed in patch x.y.z, but due to the way the new sorting works, it would be on the last page.
This example could be a major problem with the sort-by-rating rather than the sort-by-date. I would welcome the ability to set your own default sorting, but for now I guess I'll have to remember to click on the link to change the sorting method.

It appears to go "By Date" by default now. Thanks to whomever fixed it!

No problem. Thanks for complaining loudly.

It defaults to "By Date" on the Live site but not the PTR site.
