So, you're not 80, and want to get the hang of healing throughout levelling? Or you already hit 80?
Prefereably, to learn, you're far from 80. I'll give you some tips.
As it is an alt, you must know some instances. The key word in getting used to your priest is DUNGEONS. DUNGEONS. There are three main things to worry about: Your mana, Your tank's HP, and the rest of the group's HP. As a priest, you have the widest array of spells to deal with basically anything, from level 1 to level 80.
Before you pick your main path ( Discipline or Holy healing, and above 40 points in each, i'd say ), look up for all your spells. Power Word: Shield is nice; Renew should be up to keep'em topped; Flash Heals/ Greater/Lesser/Normal Heals should be used for great losses in HP.
Your typical healing pattern should not be like the 80s style: it should be "let them drop a -bit-; heal to max; rest." This is because of the Mana Per Five rule; Before you spec Meditation, it is crucial that you play this way. Let me explain: Mouseover your Mana Regen stat. See the 2 numbers? the highest is your out of 5 Second Rule (oo5sr) regen; The lowest is your mp5(Mana per 5). Each time you are casting, you trigger the 5 second rule, and for 5 seconds you only regen mana through MP5. If you cast no spell at all for 5 seconds, oo5sr is triggered. So, see why you should let your tank take a bit of damage to avoid healing "too much" (Overhealing), then leave your Power Word Shield and Renew hold some damage, then rest? This window of time alows your mana to keep going.
in your 30s you gain Prayer of Healing, and Area of effect Healing for all your party. At this level it eats up your mana like hell; If you go Discipline, however, you can macro it to Inner Focus and cast it ocasionally at 0 mana cost. Though there isn't that much hard AoE damage during lower levels, this spell will get really important later (When you can afford it better).
Then, Prayer of Healing (later, in Outlands, moving to Northrend) comes up. Use it, love it. It is background healing rolling without you noticing; It really adds up.
Through late outlands your specs can still be irrelevant (I healed myself as shadow some of the dungeons), but in Northrend, what you pick really influences the outcome of your party's sucess. Holy has a more casty heavy-healing style to it (I won't consider yet tank-AoE roles; Pre-80 you have to deal with both); Discipline is more about preventing damage and quickly reacting to it, though it starves for mana on heavy AoE fights. At this time, you'll either have Circle of Healing or Penance, and some support cooldowns. Watch your mana heavily; But now, be really careful with what i called before "windows of time". be sure to know the fight; Some heavy damage can be dealt really fast on Northrend dungeons on an unprepared party and you may not know which way to turn.
Also (this one takes practise. mere statements won't cover it.), should you know a party member is going to die... DON'T LET THAT BE YOU OR THE TANK. You get a heal addressing exactly this - Binding Heal - for harsh aoe and tank heavy damage; try to save the dps, but do not sacrifice the tank or yourself to do so; such will result 95% of the time in a wipe.
Well... there are plenty more suggestions, this is what came to my mind right now. If you ARE already 80, please let us know; my advise is mostly for levelling and hardly applies to raids, where your standalone healing is gone.
EDIT: Is your Priest the one on your Profile? If so, and for further posters, he is level 26.

Cloudp has some good advice, especially regarding the 5 second rule. You cannot spam heals until you get Meditation, or you will go OOM.
Get yourself set up with a good UI if you haven't already. Healing with the generic Blizzard UI is a bit of a grind.
Get Clique and you can take your healing spells off your action bar. Bind your different heals to different mouse buttons or keyboard/mouse combinations. As a priest you have a LOT of different heals, dispels, etc. and you'll want them all within reach at all times. Recognize how much you have to (or will have to) heal for and choose the healing spell wisely. Overhealing is a waste of mana until you're higher level and Discipline spec. In the meantime, don't waste your mana.
Practice healing with friends in some easy dungeons (i.e. ones you've practically outgrown), or on a small group of mobs until you get the hang of it.
