Where do Rogues stand (been away for awhile)

Ok, not meant as a troll, however i stopped playing for awhile and recently came back and now I can't figure out where we stand.
In PvP, I'm kinda lost as to where we stand in rock, paper, scissors.
Ok so plate classes are the "in-class" now, DKs, Wars, and Ret pallies as far as the eye can see, which is a pain considering they chew me up easily enough. But whatever, ever class gets their time to shine (although being stunlocked by a pallie and then watching them bubble out of my stuns seems backward)
Mages and hunters can kite crazy these days. Granted I've cursed frost mages since TBC, but that stun talent is pretty vicious. And hunters have that backwards blink which is a tad much.
Locks well....they still die. Although I've been hearing they are the top raid dps these days. But that could just be gossip.
And I've heard nothing but how Hybrids are stellar dps these days, and rogues are only able to keep pace with them by using complicated rotations.
I read the official forums to see where we stand on pvp & pve, but you know how hard it is actual information out of there.
Am I right to assume we are middle of the pack in PvP performance, but easy kills since our counter classes are overplayed
And in PVE we are middle of the pack unless you really push hard over the Hybrid classes that are just facerolling around the keyboard?

In pvp, the only true top tier rogue comp anymore is RMP. Dont try to play 5s, you will be kited to &*!@.
The only specs you can go are 41 / 5 / 25 and 44 / 2 / 25. Youre mut for PVP, that has not changed.
In raids, combat is mid tier on most fights but really high on 2 target fights (anub, jormungers, val'kyrs). Mutilate is behind significantly, until next patch, a recent buff will probably put mut over combat on single target fights.

RLS is popular too. While RMP is about burst, RLS is about control.
But to answer the OP, your assessment is pretty accurate. In PvP, we are still very competitive against Hunters, Mages, Druids, Locks, Shamans, and Priests. But the two most popular classes, DK and Pally, both counter us. Warriors counter us too, but luckily they aren't as common.
PvE we don't have top-notch Dps anymore, competing even with hybrids. But now we bring buffs ourselves, 3% extra crit, 4% extra physical damage, etc. On some PvE encounters which are similar to PvP, we bring stuns, CC, healing debuff, etc. Rogues are still useful in raids if we understand our role.
PvP wise, Rogues haven't changed drastically in the whole balance of things. It's just that our counter-classes are more popular now and more deadly, while the classes we counter are somewhat underplayed. Throughout WotLK, Rogues have been the least played class of all 10. But I still love playing my Rogue, I see the difficulty as a challenge. I guess it's all up to personal preference.

You kind of got that statement completely backwards, RMP is a control comp and RLS is a burst comp, lock burst >>>>> mage burst, priests last longer than resto shamans and bloodlust means youre zerging or dieing, because shammy heals die so easily.

Have you seen anub 25 man hard mode dps meters? Combat absolutely rapes. It also rapes on twin valks, faction champs, two jormungers, jaraxxus... only things it isnt amazing on are the actual single target fights of Icehowl and Goremok.

rogues are fine, in pvp we are squishy but it's the concept of the class.
in pve we can do well. BOTH as mutilate and combat. the fact that ToGC fights favors burst damage (read: combat spec) doesn't mean that mutilate is a bad spec.
for anub25 hero you really must respec combat, but form my experience, i can stay mutilate to all the other fights and do a decent amount of dps. (not top but surely enough if we reach anub).

^what he said. Combat out performs mut because of the mechanics of specific fights but pretty much they are equal in all other regards. Also mut needs a bit more hit than combat.
