The above is a link to an article on SK Gaming reporting on an interview where Rob Pardo- one of the game's creators- in responding to the question, "What's the game's biggest mistake?" answered, "we really never designed WoW to be a competitive e-sports game." In other words, someone up there is considering dispensing with Arenas upon the next installment of the game.
I thought this would be interesting to mention since in one epic thread on this forum, I opined that it's impossible for Blizzard to balance both PvE and PvP (it's pretty impossible to do with just one, actually), and thus far, they've done the right thing by focusing on balance for PvP. Apparently the game's founder feels differently. Which is why Blizzard now stands exposed to make the real mistake, and a much bigger mistake, especially from a business point of view.
I remember the first time I played an online game. Halo 2. It sucked. Nobody likes getting pwned. I thought I was much better at the game than I was. But being the competitor that I am, it didn't take long for me to become addicted; I suppose the sweetest fruit bore by this online gauntlet was when I played people who previously challenged me on my own Xbox (playing old school- in the same room together). What was before a challenge was now a mere chore- not even a hard one...yes, I was addicted.
Apparently some people can't handle that reality: that the world is bigger than their living room. Apparently some at Blizzard feel the need to cradle their bruised egos. But that would be a monumental mistake. Online gaming is the future- not just of gaming, but of the business. Yes, they get that. But the reason its the future is because people want to play against one another, not with one another...or to play with one another against another group of people playing with one another. Nobody wants to play a stupid computer all the time; puzzles have to change to be interesting. Computers may be outstanding chess players, but they're also too stupid to read the funny text at the bottom of this screen that I'm gonna have to type in so I can post this message. Humans are still greater than any AI, and what's more, you don't have to pay to develop them. They pay you to play.
Bungie realized this as quickly as Microsoft did, and the result was an almost instant one half million users paying $8 a month for online fees. That number has swelled. I simply don't understand why Rob Pardo would consider this a mistake.
If Blizzard gets rid of the arena, they get rid of me.

I've been playing for 3 years full now and i havent set foot in arena, ever, and will not be going into it, nevertheless. I just don't enjoy it. I ve grinded some BGs but they bore the hell out of me too, except maybe AB when i happen to get thrown in with decent people.
But guess what, I am still here and not bored, because the games changes enough to keep me addicted and interested. It's true that wow will lose the PvP addicts but maybe they will finally split this game into two different ones so that balancing can be done in two separate sectors, instead of adjusting PvE so that pvpers don't qq much.
I favour the change and i hope they split the game (or at least the mechanics) so that people like yourself can still enjoy the challenge.

It's usually a very bad idea to generalize. Just because you like to play againts another player, doesn't mean everyone does.
Also, PVE is not a challenge because you're playing againts the computer. It's a challenge because you're playing againts the computer with other people. There's a difference there.
You're basing a lot of your predictions of what the future will be on what
you
like. That, in itself, is a faulty assertion.

Well everyone's got a different vision of the game, we re entitled to that at least hehe
Anyway, if you actually read the article it doesn't say Arenas are going away, it just says that maybe they weren't anticipating such huge pains in the ass with balancing. Arena is here to stay so rejoice ;P

I am a casual raider and mostly do pugs and rarely a guild run, if it happens. PvP is a whole different game to me and requires good skill and mastery of not only your char but of your opponent's one too. I didn't say anywhere that pvpers are not good players. On the contrary,. most of them have a good sense of coordination and teamwork, that the simple skills that are required to operate in a raid come naturally (as they should after some time getting to know your char).
However it has no appeal to me, especially on my healing paladin i get insta locked-pwnd-silenced cced you name it. I can get out of the 1st wave of ccs but after that i am a free kill pretty much in the zerg hell that is called BGs. I don't have huge amounts of time so i pug raids and a heroic or two. That's what i enjoy most, and can't dedicate more time to get good at pvp.
But ye... thread derailed
