I am going to be purchasing both of these books at sometime in the next month. I read a summary of them last year and also watched the movie by Frances Ford Coppola and was really intrigued and wanted to read more.
I have been looking on the web and have seen various reviews on different authors that have translated them. All having positve/negative comments on their transaltion/writing style.
So for those of you who have read more than one authors interpretation or only one. Who do you think does best in terms of writing style and clarity?
Thanks in advance. =)

Yeah, I read that Robert Fagles version was good. Also read about Richmond Lattimore's version, which seemed to be the closest in regards of translation from Greek to English. But also is apparently a very hard read. N' my reading skills are decent at best.

I find it odd that you'll be purchasing a book like that for... free time reading? Don't get me wrong, I applaud such a decision, it's absolutely awesome that you are picking up Homer from the shelves.

I find most things from Ancient Greece fascinating. The history is just so rich and awesome.
Tis' the best subject of History imo.

It's a 3000 year old
Book
Story made into a book and movie.
I find it moderatley entertaining though I'm being forced to read it for school.

Read it in the ancient Greek, the best parts are 100x better.
Take this line for instance:
ου γαρ εμὸν παλιναγρετον ουδ' απατηλὸν ουδ' ατελευτητον ὅ τι κεν κεφαλῆι κατανευσω.
It's so hard to put the authority described in that line into English.

Did you say you find it odd..yssey? :D
Personally, I read the original Odyssey in ancient Greek, but I guess not everybody can read that...

Did you check the library, instead of outright purchasing them?
The best adaptation of The Odyssey I've ever seen was "O Brother, Where Art Thou".

HAHAHAHAHA. I was planning on telling the OP to learn Greek and read the original, and then when I was reading the replies above and saw someone already did that I got really excited. And then I saw it was me :P

The OP hasn't signed in since Dec of 2011. I doubt he/she still reads this thread, or is still wondering about the book, since they have had plenty of time to read it since this thread was made. This is a "help me" thread that is no longer checked by the person who needs help. It's a terrible thread to necro.
Welcome to off-topic, catwood. Try posting in
this
thread, to get started here.

Chances are they were searching the internet and came across the thread. There's also a chance that Catwood doesn't return at all.
Though what they posted is helpful to the OP who probably doesn't come here anymore, there are still good posts in this thread that can start a discussion of Ancient Greek, and Homer's work.
