To be honest, its good for a warrior. Also you have to consider that there is more or less no plate DPS gear in kara. There is very very little plate DPS gear until TK/SSC really, unless you get the badge rewards or go to ZA
Therefore he SHOULD be allowed to roll on it

My guild had a similar run in like this with a Holy Paly and a Resto shaman. A healing mail belt dropped in TK, and we ultimately ended up giving it to the shaman - but we fell upon that same logic of "Plate & Below rolling isn't fair to those stuck with their Mail & Below"
Yes, it
useful
for the warrior, but in all fairness - he will eventually throw on some T4 plate or w/e
plate
upgrade that comes by when the rogue will forever be reserved to leather. I agree that he should be able to roll on it, but not with the same priority as the rogue. It's all fine and dandy in a Kara run, where everyone and their mother is doing Kara, but you have to apply this same mentality if you were in
endgame
content and the opportunity for the item is slim.
The point has already been made that even if you break it down to a loot table, you'd have Warriors across the board followed by shamans & hunters then druids and rogues. If you allow any joe-dps to come around and roll on it - rogues will have to run upwards of 5 or 6 times (assuming it drops 100% of the time) whereas something plate drops and being as *nobody* other than him and a paly can use plate, has a higher chance of being to just up and get it by default.
Cries too much 'having your cake and eating it too'. And unless you are an outside class looking in, greed is a factor. If you are a warrior, it's easy to say "YAH LET HIM ROLL, ARE YOU KIDDING!?!" but that's being
greedy
making your opinion biased and moot. Fairness from a leaders stand-point, (being as the leaders are the ones that have to divy the gear and listen to your QQ's) I believe is the deciding factor here. Couldn't have said it better myself.
But in all seriousness, here's my two cents on the matter. Both players played a roll in taking down the NPC that dropped the item, which is why the game allows both players to roll for it. So technically, both have an equal right to go for the item. Noted, both players can put this item to good use as it is better than what either one has at the time. True, eventually the Warrior will most likely get a much better Plate armor piece that will replace this one and they will then sell or disenchant this item. But isn't it also true that the rogue will eventually find a shoulder armor piece to upgrade to? And the same thing will happen: meaning the rogue will sell or disenchant this shoulder piece.
So, if either one can make good use of the armor, why should either one be made to give up the opportunity to upgrade? Doesn't seem fair either way. Just let them both roll need if they want, and let the game decide who gets to upgrade.

Many of the above posters tell of examples of plate/mail for shaman/paladin. But that is very different from the topic starter's example.
The fact is Karazhan has a good mail healing wrist/belt/whatever, AND a good plate healing wrist/belt/whatever.
Karazhan does NOT have any plate dps shoulders.
And as such, a warrior should have the same priority on the leather shoulders as a rogue or feral druid would.
When giving priority based on item type (cloth/leather/mail/plate) can only be a good thing if an item of similar quality drops in the same raid difficulty bracet for the other item type.
