They're made by Dell, not much else to say. You're paying for a UI skin and a case, you could build the same system for far cheaper on your own.

Don't even bother if it's a desktop. Educate yourself and build one from scratch. It's really not that hard.
Alienware laptops used to be absolutely amazing (I have one from 2000 that's STILL running, albeit barely), but they've since cut serious corners and outsourced their entire tech-support to India. Personally, I'd just avoid them if at all possible.

Well to put it in perspective, I just upgraded my system to the following specs:
New:
Intel Core i7 920 Processor (2.66Ghz stock, OC'd to 4Ghz)
6 gigs of DDR3 Triple Channel Corsair Dominator Ram (Paired set 2gig/2gig/2gig)
Asus P6T Deluxe v2 motherboard.
Windows 7 Professional
From old system:
EVGA nVidia 8800GT-KO Graphics Card
Western Digital 80gb Raptor Hard Drive (10,000 RPM)
Maxtor 300gb Hard Drive
Soundblaster Audigy 2 Sound Card
The cost of the upgrade was around $1,100 or so. Factoring in the potential cost of what I saved from my old system, let's call that an even $1,700.
The closest match to my desktop I can get on Alienware's website is for $2,000.
Intel Core i7 920
Windows 7 Home Premium
nVidia GTX 260
6gigs of ram
single 640gb HD (7,200 rpm)
on-board sound
As you can see the systems are pretty much comparable. The only major difference is that come next time you want to buy a computer, you're likely going to just buy a whole new one because you don't know how to upgrade it. Where as if you take the time to learn how to build it yourself, you'll know how everything works and can easily pop open your case and change out a graphics card, or add some ram when the time comes.
