So far, we agree totally, the minor difference comes with how the timeless-events (in this case: the Cataclysm-event) affects individual characters. Their past experiences would pretty much have to be retconned as well, or - seemingly - simply be as it is. Going into past events never really made any sense anyway, but overall, the storyline doesn't always correspond completely to your characters individual past.
Going to the past? I never meant that...
Well, when we go back to Kalimdor / Eastern Kingdom, we go to the high level area, not the low ones. I can consider it as the Cata happened in the middle of Vanilla, but we can only do little to ease it. Then we go to Outland, Northrend, and the threat become more than before, so we return there to deal with it (for the characters created during/after Cataclysm). About differences point of view from characters, we can blame it to the attack of the time line, as I've said in my previous posts..
Ah, I'm of course referring to the lower level areas, not the new level 80-85 zones. No worries, we're still on the same page in that matter :)

First is the official lore. It is the way everything is supposed to be. It is the preset lore made by blizzard. Ex. Anub'arak is defeated in Azol'Nerub. Then he returns for revenge in TotC. However, players can kill him first in TotC then in Azol'Nerub. It goes against the offical lore, we will call Path X. So, how does this work? We will find out.
Basically, because Azjol'Nerub happens at around level 74-75, and TotC is lvl 80, hence after. When we defeat him the first time, we only return with
Anub'arak's Broken Husk
(presumably replaced by ice in TotC) and
The Idle Crown of Anub'arak
.
There's a lot of quests like that, like the countless encounters of Arthas around Northrend, and - as mentioned earlier - The Drakuru questlines:
Cleansing Drak'Tharon
and
Betrayal
.
New players: Cata->BC->WotLK->Cata (part 2)
Old players: Vanilla->BC->WotLK->Cata
Please
give me feedback.
Yes, but - the whole point of the thread - there will in theory only be
one
general timeline that can be "the correct" one, when looking at the overall game-progress. That is the one that I'm arguing for, which is what you describe as "New players".
And about goblin and worgen DKs :
Darion Mograine says to every Death Knights, including worgens and goblins, in the quest "Where Kings Walk" or "Warchief's Blessing", that they were once part of Horde / Alliance, and will always be. Death knights join Horde / Alliance prior to TBC, so it indicates that goblins and worgens death knights were part of H / A, before they were killed and raised to be death knights.
Actually, those quests happen during TBC, it's why there are Draenei and Blood Elves there.
And, Worgen are locked in Gilneas until the Cataclysm happens, shatters the wall, and the Forsaken invade. Care to explain how they got out?
Which is why they're then sent to Outlands, to do exactly what someone else had already done? impmaster put it exactly as I would above.
The Worgen "got out" because the gate to Gilneas was shattered before we (the players, that is) even ventured to Outlands or Northrend in the first place. It's a retcon - as it is with all new races being added.

the way i see it, is when you make a new character, you arent playing in the same timezone that you are with your other characters, you are playing through their history.
say your main is a paladin. that you have played for 4 years, that means youve played his history right up until the point you log off everynight.
so therefore it has taken you 4 years to see him through the game.
then you start a new character. but instead of him being level 1 on the same day you logged out on your four year old paladin, he reverts back to the same time that it was when your paladin was level 1
because with a new character, you arent starting a continuation of an old character, you are playing through the life of a new character.
so your new character and 4 year old paladin both started level 1 on the same day "in-game" its just you assume your new character is geared with the same gear, and has cleared the same content in just 1 year, while its taken 4 years to do the same with your paladin. i would just see that as we saw more of the paladins history/timeline, yet in the same time the new character has just gotten to the same point of the current story, but we didnt see the filler.
well that is just how i see it.
so to put it simply
Paladins time line = |----------------------------------------------------------------|
(WoW time line) level 1 Observed history level 80
(Real time line) 0years Played history 4years
New Char time line = |----------------------------------------------------------------|
(WoW time line) level 1 Observed history level 80
(Real time line) 0years Played history 1year
so your characters life always begins on the 23rd of November 2004
but it depends on you how much of its history you saw up until its present day :D
hope that wall of text made a little sense.

TBH, Outland has created kind of "together" with old WoW, since the orcs ran away from their shattering world through the Dark Portal into Azeroth,
I think Cataclysm is happening together with Wrath of the Lich King aswell, not before and not after.
