He gets captured by an alliance ship, goblins free him and then he goes to Hyjal to help Malfurion defend the world tree against Ragnaros.

Confirmed facts: In the events of cataclysm, Thrall is captured by the alliance, and the goblins rescure him, its not yet confirmed why he was captured or how. In this events, it appears Garrosh takes control of the horde, or maybe is given command of it, but neither is said why he gains leadership, only that he is in control of the horde around the time of Thralls capture.
In the events of cataclysm, Thrall and Cairne travel across azeroth to try and help or battle the raging elements that have risen up, and doing so he goes to help Malfurion at hyjal to battle the fire lord.
Specualtions (As in what people think will happen as oppose to facts): People speculate that Thrall has given Garrosh leadership of the horde, they speculate that he is going to kill Cairne at some point too. More speculation that this was all set up by Garrosh to see to it that Thrall wa captured by the alliance so he could gain leadership.
The difference between facts and speculation runs thin here, but because of it so much said on the forums people start to believe the speculations.

Thrall is captured by the allianceSeems to have been; it's possible those are really Black/Twilight flight members in disguise because I can't see regular Alliance people able to capture a man who the spirits watch over.

I think Thrall lets himself be captured so he can go help and recruit the goblins into the Horde.

Adams has a point, they are wearing black after all, just like most black dragons in humanoid form...
Welcome to Wowhead, btw.
right right right, cause alliance wouldn't ever be wearing something as sinister as black now would they?

ya cause taking the leader of 1 of your enemies as a prisoner of war is sinister right?
Well in that case if they are alliances, I'm gonna enjoy roasting them all the more on my goblin warlock, Meh huh huh!

It IS weird that they aren't wearing their regular golden blueish uniforms though.
Exactly my thoughts.... prehaps they are mercenarys?
Could always be remnants of the Jaina Proudmoore's dads people /shrug

Only reason why I've been thinking it's Deathwing's children that capture Thrall;
1. There are no pure Alliance mages who could shut down a shaman of Thralls strength.
2. He just happens to be freed near the Goblins' new island, which is being destroyed by the Black Flight.
3. Blizzard likes to re-cycle ideas.

Cairne is dead, is he not?
Considering that image you see of Thrall and Cairne rescuing a blood elf girl, it suggests more that he and Thrall are out there doing something more then supposed rumors from MMO champ.
If Cairne does die in cataclysm, theres not been anything other that rumors to say so.

If Thrall is captured, Garrosh will take control of the Horde immediately. He is already very popular amongst the Orcs, and has already made one attempt to challenge Thrall for leadership (it was interupted by the Scourge assault on Orgrimmar). If he hadn't been sent off to Northrend to lead the assault either he or Thrall would be dead already.
Cairne may in fact be killed, but as has been shown in the Borean Tundra quest
http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=11638
resurrection isn't just for players.
Of course, the events displayed on the poster may take place during the Cataclysm. Thrall could be captured while away from Orgrimmar, Garrosh takes control of the Horde. When Cairne calls for a rescue, or objects to Garrosh refusing to send help to Thrall, the new Warchief brands him a traitor.
All of this could be shown in a lovely quest line entitled, While you were away, or something like that.
This strikes me as the most likely case, that Thrall will not willingly give leadership to the horde to Garrosh, but, when Thrall is captured, Garrosh takes control, and because of events taking place with the elemental lords, Thrall must put first using his powers to try and battle the elemental forces, and so he can not fight Garrosh for control at that time.
And if this is the case, then Garrosh would have taken control of the horde against any protacal the orcs have.
I'm hoping, so hoping to see one very *!@#ed of Saurfang keep his promise.
