Perhaps the looks do put many people of. Personally I can't stand the Draenei male tails. Swishing about the place. Bugs the h3ll out of me. The advantage of the Trolls is that they look like a different race. Humans, blood elves, night elves are basically the same. Dwarves, orcs and gnomes are just short versions.
Draenei just have tails added
. Barring a different teint here and there.
The only races with a real different look are the Tauren, undead and trolls. A good thing as I decided to go Horde from the get go. For a hunter only the Tauren and Troll are left. I chose the Troll for the racials (IIRC).
I agree with the rest, but draenei also have hooves, a head crest, tentacles and glowing eyes. They look completely different from the other people...

1. trolls seriously are the coolest shamans ever, if you wanna play shammy you should go trolls. Why you say, bcs trolls can use 6 totems instead of 4, they just carve their tusk with light and thunder and kick your arse!
2. trolls are so gangsta then Chuck norris was on a crusade and run into a troll from behind, while charging the troll turned and chuck hesistated into that smile of confident and after a few secs he decided he got better things to do.
(on topic, i think it is bcs of their animations partly, people got a problem with troll also from other mmorpg then they are usually considered kinda dumb and slow thinkers who is brutes).

Wall of text Warning!
I'm a woman and obviously by my username I love the Troll. I have both female and male Trolls and if every class was available to them I would make my own Troll army. However, I prefer the males much more over the females.
I like the Trolls because they just feel so easygoing and carefree, when you enter mayor cities the NPCs always say things like "Strength and Honor!", "Dark lady watch over you...", "Victory for Sylvanas!", "For the Sunwell!", then you go to Thunderbluff and it's all about "Walk with the earthmother", "May the eternal sun shine upon you".. then you spot one of the random trolls in the city and it's " 'ello, mon!", "How ya doin', mon?". Sure they also say "Spirits be with ya, mon", but it's not majority of the time. I love the accent too.
(I also like the Goblins because they also seem carefree and always have something funny to say)
I find the male trolls oddly attractive, mostly because of their slender appearance, I think most male races in the game are way too "bulky", muscles can look good, but in Wow majority of males just have too much muscle. Their wrists look deformed, there is no definition of a wrist, it just connects straight to the thumb like a concrete block.
And since the male trolls are almost always slouched over, it's like a "special treat" when they stretch their backs and you can see how tall (and handsome) they are.
It's hard to pinpoint why I like the females, they feel very out of place which I will describe further down.
I agree with what has been said that there is something "wrong" with the way Trolls look. Here's what I don't like about them:
Males:
- Dorky looking faces, while they have a sinister look in all the character art. They almost look too friendly… big scary tusks with puppy-eyes don't mix. The Tauren male and Orc male look so evil and angry on both character art and in game.
- No facial hair (Troll on loading screen has facial hair and so does the character art)
- Armor and weapons poke through as they are not designed to be carried by the slouching males. I looked at an image of a shield that poked through the whole head. Just terrible!
- Lack of interesting hairstyles, I mostly use the Mohawk or the "braids" hairdo.
- I find the Rogue red mask ridiculous on a Troll with the largest tusks. Why cover the whole tusks, why not just design the mask to just cover the face? It takes away the coolness of covering your face when the mask extends almost a meter away from your face. It goes from facemask to comfort blanket. "You can't hide 'em tusks, mon!"
- The slouching over really sets the male apart a lot from the other races (The Undead slouch over too, but not in this extent), but it looks unhealthy. I have explained before I have health problems and one part of it is because I have a poor posture. I've end up in a "bad circle" because of it, slouching over is the least painful, but the more I slouch over, the more pain I will end up in later on in life. Sometimes I can barely stand up for 5 minutes, but if I slouch over while standing, it takes the pain away. As I see it, the Troll males do the same, as soon as they stop walking or stretched out their back, they instantly start slouching over again. I can't imagine it being comfortable in the long run.
Females
- 4 face options and non of them are particularly appealing, you take the airhead look over the "ugly witch" faces. I do like one of the "witch faces" because it makes my femtroll look more awesome. (the one with the scar on the forehead)
- Hairstyle selection is a choice between "Attitude" vs "5 year old girl" hairdo. (same as Undead, Orc and Tauren). In the character art we see females with fantastic hair and some that make them look very feminine, so I don't know why we are stuck with so many "short dude hair". To solve the issue with long hair, they could make a ponytail hairstyle when the character is wearing armor that would poke through or make the hair be parted on the front. (it's hard to explain what I mean, I can't find a good english word)
The Barber Shop disappointed me, because it just showed that Blizzard has no concept of what makes a woman look feminine, especially when they converted the "double sided ponytail" to Undead females. Majority of women don't wear this kind of hairstyle because they think it looks childish. I don't think any female race besides Blood Elf Females look feminine, because all other races has such childish/dude like hair, or it looks like they don't even bother doing anything with the hair. (Night Elf female) Human female has some decent hair, but it looks like the hair is naturally wavy, not that they spent time getting the hair done.
- They don't resemble their male counterpart enough to look like a Troll. They just look like a barbie-doll with blue color. It's the same problem I have with Tauren females. The Tauren Female alpha model looks so awesome I would instantly pick them, but in the game you are stuck with a wimpy looking hairy barbie doll. It irritates me that they changed the Tauren females so they would be smaller than the male and give them bigger breasts to make them more "feminine." Troll female seems in the alpha to stand just as tall as the male, were much thinner, "uglier" and had longer ears. Unfortunately Bliz also made them smaller, they got more flesh on their bones and definitely had their breast sized increased. If Troll female looked like their alpha, they probably would stand out as the tallest females in the game. Now there's not much keeping them original or particularly interesting. They lack character. The Tauren females at least have a bit more personality.
The reason I think a lot of players don't like playing with trolls have to do with the male slouching and how it portrays their character. The females in the alpha model also seemed to slouch and stand just as tall as the males. The slouching is hard to tell, but they did sit just as the males do, which they don't do in the actual game.
The theory behind the slouching is that they show "respect" to the Orcs and Tauren by not standing taller than them. But what message does that send? "I want to show respect, but I am not going to stand up for myself so I can stand tall. That would be disrespectful."
So to please others, they slouch over and that looks to me like it takes away a lot of their selfesteem. Trolls are just not tough enough to stand up for the right to walk any way they please. They look mentally weak. A gnome on the other hand, while looking tiny and defenseless, they have a lot of attitude. They are not afraid of speaking their mind. They have claimed their place in Ironforge (Tinkertown) while in Orgrimmar, you see just a few Trolls and the rest lives on the shore in a small village. They don't claim a place in the main city. The small mage area seems to be the only place, but look how secluded the area is. In Ironforge, you must pass Tinkertown to take the tram. I would be more frightened by a gnome who is mentally strong than a Troll who is psysically strong, but mentally weak.
I've read some of the lore, but not all, and it seemed the Trolls were into cannibalism when joining Horde, but stopped doing it after some talking with the other Horde. They are into Voodoo, but the actual voodoo seems not to do much besides turning people into things or making them fly up in the air for "fun".
So when you pick a troll, the character already looks weak when you start playing... why would you want to pick a character that portrays weakness?
On the other hand, a Troll shows a more carefree side which is why I picked them, but I think the majority of people will look at the Troll and think "Weak" and go with the Orc or Tauren instead. I was surprised they were so popular, but now it's easy to see they portray strength and pride. And it made me think a bit, do I want to play a Troll when it makes my character look mentally weak?
But I think I will stick with my Trolls for their carefree and "crazy sense of humor". I could stand all day talking to the voodoo doctor in Sen'Jin Village making him turn me into snakes and whatever.

I agree with everything you said, but i am glad they did away with the alpha version of the female Troll. The female Troll alpha is one of the most hideous creatures i have seen in my life. Not to say the female Troll we have now is great, they definitely need a huge improvement.
If anyone else is wondering what the female troll alpha lookes like

Make sure to turn your eyes away at the end.

I don't get why people don't play them, or even not like them.
They're my favorite race, and they're one of the best in my opinion, both player and roleplaying-wise.
What's your opinion?
They're Ugly....
Yeah they are. I mean I know their meant to be ugly-ish, but blizz pushed it with the design flaws (tusks through helms, eyes and face expressions, and making the males hunched when their supposedly the tallest race in game), obviously made people choose other races over them. Like Undead are ugly, but their ugly in a good way, like-evil-killer-zombie-from-a-horror-movie kind've way. Undead are great because their feel is evil, but devishly appealing.
Forsakens are freaky, thats what you meant. Anything that isnt troll grasps my attention. Troll are playable, but once they become real totem freaks and Mojo lovers with that......odd accent it just kills my entire mood. Espacially after realizing the Mojo Lover part.<.<
But then again, different people have different taste. ^.^

True. When I started I went Horde, so Draenei weren't an option. Perhaps that is why I overlooked their difference.
I hope Blizz stop with Hero classes and the next expansion we also get two new races, and that these are not humans-but-slightly-different.
