490 defense is the cap for raiding (leve 73 bosses). regular 5 man instances don't require those kind of stats....
for 5mans, 485 is the cap: level 72 boss x 5 = 360, plus 125 def pts to negate the normal 5% chance to crit
you do not need to be at the cap to tank there instances. the cap just tells you when you've got enough def rating, so you can start buffing other stats.

I would try to build up 490 right now, as it never hurts to have the max (well unless you sacrifice stats for stupid def points :P). There are plenty of good def items to be had in 5mans before you get to heroics, where you would want the def cap. Might as well try to get them now.
To answer the question, shadow labs is not srs business :)

I have defense 431 and tank SLabs just fine. Around 11513 armor, 9800 health. Certainly not the greatest gear but just turned 70 the first week in February.
Wish I could get the guild to understand that just because you have many points in Protection doesn't necessarily mean you're a tank.

SO! if you have a crap load of points in the prot tree your a dps warrior? what do ya call that build?
think before you post
I realize the brainlessness of your response is directly related to your inability to read exactly what was written. Perhaps your comprehension talent tree needs more points.
As written before, just because a warrior has put a lot of points (41 to 50) in protection DOES NOT mean they are a tank. (Original post said nothing about DPS) I certainly agree you should think before you lamely lambaste.
Our guild has two other 70 warriors protection spec'd yet all of the gear is attack power or crit chance. None of it is stamina nor defense related. As was written earlier, you can be speced protection and not necessarily called a tank.

i dont understand...why would u EVER have 41-50points in prot if u arent a tank??
This is the simplest question to answer since the answer is right in front of you.
"Because they don't understand what being tank means."
The guild members seem to be stuck in arm/fury mode though they are spec'd protection which is probably why they have such a problem with outland instances and considering they have been 70 for about 6 months suggests they should have seen the light go on by now. Perhaps they are wearing their set of DPS gear for a given instance or BGs? Well, I thought of that, but the last four times running with them in Coilfang, they had the same gear. Certainly they won't be the last to misconstrue a given talent tree and as mentioned before
When you think about it, a hunter wearing all Spell Crit gear "dufas" or a rogue wearing all +x Healing & Spell Dmg gear is much the same thing. Don't get me started on mages wearing +Attack Power gear either.
Back to the original question, defense 437 (small upgrade) seems to do well for me in Slabs with a descent healer and at least a mage or warlock.

<snip>...
son..you think before you post... you make no sense what so ever, pointlessly flaming people, hell do u even know what a tank does? then u have the balls to get on here and try to tell us your not a tank if u have 40-50 points in the prot tree? wow... irrogance is your excuse ay? hell go back to thott....
your inability to post just made you look like a fool.. fast question, with smart people like you in your guild yall have progressed to like what attumen in kara? honestly, and your telling us how your 437def does well for you in slabs? GTFO, also link me your armor so i can laugh at your greens...
Firstly, I am certainly not your son. My ability to walk upright and no need to wear a football helmet during recess should prove that. Do you work of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles? The typically order is idiots, imbeciles, retards, morons and the people who work at the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
I re-read the entire thread once again and should you have been paying attention, I merely reflect the attitude and tenner of the respondent. Perhaps you would be kind enough to define for the rest of use what is means to be a "tank"?
I certainly do have the nads and they are fully functional. How are the chemical castration treatments going anyway?
Seriously though, ignorance is merely the lack of knowledge. It can be cured. There are many times I am ignorant and in those times I seek knowledge. Stupidity (your affliction) however, cannot be cured for it is have knowledge and willfully failing to use it. Take a chance and start walking in the path of light rather than the alley of the dank & dark.
I guess I missed your "fast question" in your post. Are you asking for an attunement "like" that of Karazhan? Or did you have another dungeon in mind that has a long quest chain for attunement? Generally, articulate people do not use terms such as "like what" in the middle of an alleged fast and purportedly specific question since it only leads to confusion. If I might give advise though, persistence seems to go farther in this game than smarts.
Let me be very clear on this point, Defense 437 does well for me in Shadow Labs full run, Murmur included. Thankfully, I upgraded last night from a drop and am sitting at 452 Defense, 12133 armor, 9874 health. It was a good night for tanks during that run.
gtfo? Seriously, cussing (or acrynym cussing) is really uncalled for in any of the forums regardless of the posts. Of course, I hadn't till this moment would have considered you a Valley Girl. That would explain alot. The remainder of your comment suggests that your only purpose is to lamely lambaste others rather then discuss contructive ideas and answer the original poster's question.
In the interest of fairness, simply say to yourself, "Yes, this discussion should be more constructive and more on topic, I'll do better." This is your chance to signify maturity.
Thanx again to Wowgeek who hit the nail right on the head.

besides def, stamina is important in slabs. the first boss fears, and it may take the healer a second or two to get back in range and get a heal off. i've had group fall apart because of this problem.
9k with buffs should be good enough. 10k+ is very desirable.

<snip>... If you put 41-50 points in Protect( which is his direct quote) and you are not tanking. Then what are you? A Pi** poor Plate rogue???? You say his gear is may not be good enough to tank, then thats a failure on his part not to have gear that is. Protection has but one purpose. TANKING. A protect Warr will NEVER out DPS a arms/Fury Warr.
Sorry, but I have done a warrior to 70. That doesnt make a bit of sense.
Your first sentence is either incomplete or merely a statement. Originally, I thought it was a question yet the question mark is located in the second sentence which consequently a fragment only. I believe what are you asking is what do you call a person that puts 40+ points in protection yet his gear is not stamina nor defense related? That answer would be someone who does not understand what it means to tank.
Certainly not having the opportunity by way of instance running or questing to get the more coveted armor is the responsibility of the given adventurer. This has never in dispute to my recollection in this thread.
Would you please define tanking?
Your comment about "A protect Warr will NEVER out DPS a arms/Fury Warr." is probably the most beautiful way of accentuating my earlier points. Since my earlier comments when directly to alleged "tanks" that had nothing but attack power items as showing the rudimentary (at the least) misunderstanding of what it means to be a tank.
Really? A 70 warrior? Congratulations! What a coincidence, I have as well. Mine was arms til 65 when I respeced to tank.
Let's try to keep on topic.
