All tragedies are at heart the fault of the major player (unless they're Greek tragedies, in which case the protagonist is %^&$ed from the beginning).
Yes, Illidan 'did it to himself' (well, how else, since he was all alone?) but his reactions and reasons for doing what he did are understandable, if not condonable.
And yes, the OP is wrong...and funny.Well, for the OP I mainly followed the
Rule of Funny
, exaggerating as needed... :P
But really, life imprisonment for an immortal being is just cruel. Underground, in blind darkness, with no one to talk to. At least human inmates get to go outside, exercise, talk to their loved ones, etc. What Illidan got was vastly disproportionate to his crime. Malfurion didn't even want to free him.
Imagine what would have happened if he didn't... Tyrande would be dead, the Lich King would have taken over the world, and Outland would belong to the Legion.

Why?Well, I suppose Tyrande might be alive. She followed Maive to the Eastern Kingdoms, who in turn was chasing Illidan...
But of course, had not Illidan nuked the Frozen Throne, Arthas would have finished the Undercity, the Forsaken would never have broken free, and the Scourge would have been able to finish the job.
And of course, Illidan took Outland from Magtheridon.

And of course, Illidan took Outland from Magtheridon.I could see maybe Tichondrius possibly killing them if Illidan hadn't been set free to kill him... of course the whole "Eating the Skull of Gul'dan and creating Felwood" dims the success there.
We don't really know that, mainly because Illidan failed with his spell, which also was what caused the bridge to collapse under Tyrande...... As for the Arthas thing, hard to tell.
Don't forget Illidan ran to Outland to escape Kil'jaeden, and instead summoned him to the destroyed lands, where Kael and Vashj were able to cause so much pain and suffering there, as they followed Illidan. And of course, Kil'jaeden aquired Kael because he was in the Outland so there's another black mark for the insane one.

The left a lot of blight on their way up. (WC3 Blight, not WotLK Blight)
We don't really know that, mainly because Illidan failed with his spell, which also was what caused the bridge to collapse under Tyrande...... As for the Arthas thing, hard to tell.He failed to destryo the Frozen Throne, but his attacking and weakening it caused the Lich King's powers to leak out, allow the Forsaken to break free, and forcing Arthas to return to Northrend.
Don't forget Illidan ran to Outland to escape Kil'jaeden, and instead summoned him to the destroyed lands, where Kael and Vashj were able to cause so much pain and suffering there, as they followed Illidan. And of course, Kil'jaeden aquired Kael because he was in the Outland so there's another black mark for the insane one.But the Legion controlled it. And they very well could have wiped us out when the Dark Portal opened, had not Illidan and Co. killed so many of their standing forces and closed their portals.
And again, my main point is, the imprisonment thing was waaaaay too harsh.

And again, my main point is, the imprisonment thing was waaaaay too harsh.Yeah, but you believe in redemption. Illidan.... the crap he did in the war of ancients, most of it motivated by jealousy, just screams "Look at me! I am Important! Not my Tree-hugging Brother!" Yes, he shouldn't have been locked up for 10 thousand years, in all honestly, he should have been killed the instant they realized what he did, and the new Well should have been destroyed at that time.
I mean, if he had never created the second Well, Felwood would still be pure, as there would have been no need for the Demons/Scourge and magical duel between Demon Illidan and the Dreadlord to stomp through the zone itself, as they're wouldn't have been a world tree to destroy.

Dying
is preferable to life imprisonment as an immortal. The "merciful" punishment they gave him was not only far worse than dying, but it was far worse than his crime deserved. It's probably one of the worst tortures I can possibly think of.

You know the really ironic thing there? If he had never created the second Well, which the dragons felt the need to bless...... the immortality thing wouldn't have mattered and he would have died of old age in a few hundred years, so...... wow, even his own insanity is his own fault. Seriously, he is that idiotic, he screwed himself over and drove himself insane.... now that is a master work.

That's not his own fault. He indirectly gave the Night Elves immortality, yes. (And boy, weren't the grateful...), but it was
them
who sentenced him to immortal life in prison.
Underground no-one-to-talk-to prison.

Underground no-one-to-talk-to prison. He still brought it on himself. Yes, Malfurion was too kind hearted to kill his brother.... but Illidan isn't blameless, he did betray everyone in a mad grasp for power, attention and the love of Tyrande. He created a second Well, which was a crime, and I don't see being forced to protect the well for the rest of their lives all that great of a trade off for immortality for the rest of the Night Elf race. So, yeah, we're at an impass here Skreeran heh, but that's fine.

I don't deny he did wrong, but I can't even think of a crime worth imprisoning someone for eternity over. That's hell itself.
And trust me, I can think of some ^&*!ed up crimes.

Malfurion: I love you bro, I hope you understand. Now Maive is gonna take you away while I make sweet hot love to the woman you wish you had.
Tyrande: I'll get the whip.
Illidan: &%$#
You, sir, are brillient! I lol'd so hard!Stole the words out of my mouth.
I was about to make a topic about Stormrages too... >.>
He is a tragic hero, in my true opinion. His major flaw is himself - He was infatuated with Tyrande. In TFT, it was Illidan who ordered the Naga to save Tyrande before she drowned, not Malfurion. Shows who cared more in my opinion...

Not quite, Malfurion was going to go save her but Illidan said that the Naga could reach her quicker.
