So, I was flying around, on my way to solo Karazhan...
When I literally ran into Dalaran.
How long has this been here?

Just since the patch I think. I did too. Looks like skin and bones though. Nothing much is in there, and the map turns into a green mass when you wander in.

Yeah. Did some wandering around, none of the shops seem to be open, and I can't find a way into the sewers.
Also, they literally just demolished the fountain celebrating victory in Icecrown to build a tower.... What a bunch of !@#$s.

Yes, that's the Dalaran that ports to above the Broken Isles.

They also demolished the little artsy statue at the OTHER fountain that used to send a signal from algalon to...... build a statue of Rhonin.
At least this one wont be yelling "CITIZENS OF DALARAN, RAISE YOUR EYES TO THE SKIES AND OBSERVE!!!" every 5 flicking minutes.
But yes, dalaran moved to the eastern kingdoms as of august 9th, and will stay there until august 30th, at which point, it relocates to the broken shore.
Interestingly, this little event shows that dalaran is not this invincible flying fortress that rains death from above as some people seem to believe. You can't fly this city around. You have to teleport it from place to place. Doing so requires a tremendous effort on the part of the entire council of six, and even briefly incapacitates the city for a while (as you can see, some citizens are stuck on the walls, the bank vaults were all damaged with all the money spilling out, etc) and the city itself can't really MOVE at all, you want to reposition it? you have to blink it again, which is not something that can truly be spammed.

I do wonder, though, if they could just stick some rocket boosters or something to it and make it easier.

I have no doubt that at one point or another, more than one gnome and/or goblin mage has expressed a desire to do this to the city, but I imagine the council, not to mention the rest of the city, wouldn't want to take that chance.

Jaina wanted a seaside view.
And northrend did not agree with her dress.

My best guess is that blizzard wanted to convey that wherever dalaran was, it was no longer in northrend. They moved it there to serve as a central base of operations, both for the Nexus War, and for the War on the Scourge, but once both were done with, there was little point in exposing the city like that, so at some unknown point between Wrath and MoP, they moved it to a more secure location.
Now that the legion's come again, they are moving it to where its needed most.
I've noticed also an extra pattern. When moving the city around, they almost always choose a location where a lot of raw energy converges, usually a leyline anchor or similar. In Wrath, that was cystalsong forest, an entire region that was nuked by mana turning everything to crystal. In Legion, they first land in Karazhan which is like the central focus point of magic on the whole planet, but when the expansion launches, they land it near Suramar, the broken shore, and azsuna. All 3 locations containing a very strong raw source of magic (The Nightwell, the tomb of sargeras, and the Arcane Academy respectively).
Could it be that they leech off magic from these locations to "refuel" the city so to speak? Interesting theory.(##RESPBREAK##)520##DELIM##Rankkor##DELIM##

Read the prepatch article on wowhead. Apparently it's there for a quest before Legion goes live. Of course, the quests aren't live yet, but they better hurry it up to get in before the expansion.
Or...does it have anything to do with the mage quest Rank? I think you mentioned Karazhan played a role in that.

Normally what happens is that after the Broken Shore, you are summoned to Dalaran which then teleports out above the Shore and you start your Class Hall quest from there. But since those quests haven't started yet, they have Dalaran in place for the next part.

Broken shore as in the scenario, or the quest zone?

The zone; Dalaran ends up
here
, between Azuna, Suramar and the Shore.

So, besides the demons of Mardum, have any actually died? The only one I can think of is Socrethar the Not-So-Eternal, but that's only because his death-quote implies it.
Also, would Illidan be permanent-dead if he dies in the Nether?
How do you think this whole respawn thing works? I don't think it's time based, because Azgalor died after Mannoroth, yet the former is present at the Broken Shore while the latter is not.

So I'm running around with Aeda Brightdawn on my warrior. The Warlock tank bodyguard.
I'm so upset that Warlocks lost that style. And now they don't even have the "Meta-burst" Demonology playstyle.
Demon Hunters just don't play the same. And I basically hate all three warlock specs now.

Not so far; even the ones on Mardum aren't actually gone. For Illidan, as seen when a demon hunter dies, he talks to you about the fact that you have an immortal soul like just he does...and then tells you to get back in your corpse :P If you destroyed his soul, you'd probably destroy the Emo King. As for the respawn; can take a long time for it to happen or it can be almost instantaneous depending on the demon type I think.Though, in regards to Mannoroth; I don't think we see him there because we just 'killed' him in Hellfire and they didn't want to put him back in already.

It will be. The pre-legion event is gonna come in 3 waves.
Wave 1 was last tuesday, and it involved demon hunters, broken shore, and demon invasions.
Wave 2 is today, it involves karazhan, and an increased tempo on the demon invasions (increased by 300%)
Wave 3 is next tuesday, and it involves Ulduar along with another increase in frequency of demon invasions (this time making them permanent)
And then the tuesday after that is legion launch.
Also no, as far as I know, the mage campaign doesn't involve karazhan.

Aaaaactually no.
That's how its gonna work after legion launches.
Post august 30th, future players who reach 100, will have to do the broken shore (once, its skippable on future alts if one wishes) and then immediately be sent to the new dalaran hovering on the broken isles.
But we're in the pre august 30th, so people who finish the broken shore, will instead do a small but fun questchain that takes them to ulduar and karazhan, and rewards a nice pair of gloves that deal extra arcane damage when fighting demons.

The demons on Madrum don't die. Several of them show up again in the broken shore. After all, madrum is not the twisting nether.
Socrethar is implied to be dead yes, because the idiot refused to let his soul go to the twisting nether, and instead decided to anchor it inside a robot.
As for why Azgalor is there, but Mannoroth is not, that's because it takes a lot of time for a demon to reform. Now, you may be thinking "but mannoroth died before azgalor" and you're right, which is why Mannoroth came back first......... in WoD. Because (and I really hate this part) all demons transcend timelines and dimensions. Mannoroth is the same guy in all the timelines, as is any demon. Apparently someone turning into a demon automatically kills all their alternate selves in any past and future dimensions, because this single demonic entity is the same across all the timelines.
The Archimonde we killed in draenor (And he IS dead for good, when done on mythic, phase 4 takes place on the twisting nether) was apparently "our" archimonde who died on Hyjal (Which is why we wont see him in legion) and the mannoroth we killed in draenor was also "our" mannoroth as well.
Ugh, this "one across the timelines" crap makes my head hurt.
