Personal preference only there: Hated those types of quests as they really broke up the leveling flow.

You see, I don't think leveling should have a 'flow'.
It should be an adventure through another world. Not a game or a story-mode.

Well that's an interesting perspective. My guess is that most of people (my esteemed self included) do not take it all too well to go across the world all of a sudden just to talk to that human guy in Barrens.
And while prowling through enemy territory is fun, prowling through enemy territory inhabited by enemies you are not even supposed to be able to defeat may be... taxing.

Such as going from level 20 in the Exodar to the level 24+ mobs for the final part of the Water Totem.

I'm going to agree here. I hated the !@#$ing Totem quests...they needed to die. In fact, I almost cried out in joy when I did the Air Totem quest...

And made an interesting feature. Having to sneak about in order to get through, or just corpse run. It was what made me sink hours and hours into my first character without care, and I loved every minute of it.

So by that argument you'd enjoy corpse running through EPL and WPL as a Blood Elf...right? =)

I actually did that. Although, I was an undead going to SMC, as I didn't know about the orb.
It was amazing fun. Running from Welcome bear was hilarious.

I hated those.
But I can see where Atik's coming from.
Levelling now seems like a rush to get you to the next zone, and if you're following the stories in zones and completing all of the quests, as well as occassionally PvPing or doing a dungeon, you usually end up out-levelling some of the zones. I liked the slower pace for levelling and the more sandbox nature of it pre-Cata, I loved the quest for the Blood Knight spear at level 20 and the tabard and epic mount at 60. I loved going for Benediction, even if my priest by the time I got it outlevelled the quest. I don't know. I feel like it's more convenient now for levelling (for instance, if you're in a raiding guild and make an alt you can be in Outlands after only a relatively short time), but that it's at a cost for new players coming into the game, all they're experiencing is a race to the top, and there might be less fond memories or appreciation for the early days of their playtime.
Besides, after a breakneck pace in Azeroth, it then slows down in Outland and Northrend (although to a lesser degree in Northrend, imo) and it's like playing another game entirely. I won't deny that they did a good job with the new zones, I loved most of them (Uldum you know my problems with), and sure - we're more involved with the storyline progression in zones, but there are still limitations. It's like phasing - I think there should be an option to toggle which phase you're in when you have completed the relevant quest lines. There's less of a community spirit now than I remember there being pre-Cata, because everything has moved from the server to the battlegroup, and phasing blocks out many other players.
TL;DR - Cataclysm is focused towards convenience, to the detriment of whatever they feel like. Some players may have enjoyed these changes, but I didn't. Hence why I quit.

(on which they did a FANTASTIC JOB I may add).
I preferred leveling before Cata.
hey, if you're into BDSM and general masochism, that's ok, we're not gonna point fingers or judge you or anything, but to me, out of the nearly 2k vanilla quests, only about a 100 were fun, the rest were pretty much an ulcer waiting to happen.
As far as I am concerned, there already wasn't any community feeling in pre-cata 1-60. I rarely encountered anyone in the 4 alts I levelled through it.
My memorable moments form the original 1-60 are directly related to the story and the more epic quests you could do, therefore they were few and far in between. Now however things are much more exciting with something like the new Silverpine, vash'jr or the new eastern plaguelands for you to see through.
BC brought us convenience. Wrath brought us interactivity. Cataclysm brought us full-blown immersion.
So if you argue against convenience, the questing isn't for you since BC (the Outland levelling is quite convenient and at that time it patched the old world to greatly reduce the damage of, say, the defias mage from westfall).
If you argue against Wrath or Cataclysm, you're arguing against the evolution of the story driven portion of roleplaying.
/points at delt.....
listen to this guy. HEAR THE GOSPEL!
on another news, after taking a peek at some more detailed info about the pandaren starting zone, I found something that brought joy to this old heart =D
A CRASHED ALLIANCE GUNSHIP!
HALLELUJAH =) so they CAN be sinked, well, writers of wow, that's 1, now sink another 3 breakers to even the toll >.<
now that I think about it, the main reason they could had chosen the hammer as the "go-to" ship to sink is because they made a specific model of a torned and shipwrecked hammer in the first place, but no such model exists of the breaker. Now on MoP there is a model of alliance gunship crashed and I hope to christ they use and abuse it just as badly as they did with the hammer model.

You're right, things were nerfed a bit in BC, but Cataclysm brought it much further in convenience. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the more interactive questing in Cataclysm such as in the new zones, but the pre-OL zones are basically a chain-race to Outland, and you easily outpace the story, and then there are the zones such as Ashenvale where the story is left hanging at a half-way point when you finish the zone.
In TBC when I was levelling more low-level characters, I almost always encountered other players. In WotLK pre-OL, granted, I saw fewer low level players, but still more than I saw in Cata on a full server, compared to a medium realm I played on in TBC/WotLK. Guilds (particularly levelling/sandbox type guilds) are less like communities than they used to be, with more members just joining for the perks compared to in TBC/WotLK, when there were still a few people who did join guilds just to try and get goodies out of the guild bank. :P Dungeon finder, while convenient (and implemented pre-Cata, I know, but still following a similar design philosophy), led to groups being more like zerg-swarms than anything else, whereas when you made the effort to construct a group, usually the other players would participate in some chat in /p. There feels like less of a social element of 'MMO'RPGs in Cata!WoW, to me, as it's becoming increasingly difficult to expand your circle of friends and acquantances (probably spelt that wrong) in the game.
I know I was a part of the not-easily-pleased fanbase, but now that I have experienced the Cata experience I can safely say I want the old one back, although I think the best solution would have been a marrying of both design philosophies. If you prefer Cata, obviously you'll disagree, but that's what I'm thinking. It doesn't help that I am fully disenchanted with the game, so I'm more likely to put a negative spin on things, but still. ;)

Which I don't like. It kills my imersion to think that my character single-handedly won the Gilnean War, or saved Uldum with some lackluster help from Harrison Jones.
WoW used to be unique in that is was the game where I felt like an adventurer, one of many, rather than that single last hope for everything; the rest of the world would be worthless without me.
Not it has stopped being a world and is just another video game.

Maybe because... IT'S NOT READY YET?
its not like its a complex science you know? as my friend from the guild says: "when in doubt, just grab the first piece of plate you can think of, and slap some skulls on it"
and there you go.
