I seriously doubt they could fit the entire Kingdom of Azol-Nerub into a single 5man instance and the Old Kingdom in another.
A simple change of words to keep this in perspective.
The entire Elemental Plane will collide with Azeroth, we might not see all of it, but in a more flexible engine (a pen and paper RPG) we would be able to do so.
I think it was a mistake to make Azjol Nerub/Old Kingdom instances, one I hope they will not repeat. Azjol'Nerub should be a zone, with the royal chamber of Anub'Arak as a respective raid within it, including the Old Kingdom and Herald Volazj as bosses within it.

I can understand the choice to make Anub a 5-man (although I do not agree with it). But I have to agree it was a poor choice to not make Azjol-Nerub its own Zone.
Anyone know why this was done? Wowwiki says nothing as to the motive.
Were there issues with an underground zone? Or was it simply Blizz being lazy?

Laziness in my opinion. That place is epic beyond words, no bug should stop them from trying. Personally, they should've ditched Zul'Drak, shoving it into Grizzly Hills and making both zones a bit smaller, and had a fraction of the underground caverns of Azjol-Nerub take it's place.

Well with it being Underground they wouldn't have had to, they could have just placed it under the surface zones.

I meant for the sake of leveling as well as deadlines of release. Zul'Drak just seemed to lack preexisting lore or new significant lore to become it's own zone, such as Storm Peaks for Ulduar or Dragonblight for the Aspects.

Trolls civilizations in ruin being roflstomped by the players is a tradition since WoW Classic!
Actually Lands of Mystery already mention it.
Yes, but compared to Azjol Nerub and the history of the Aquir it is insignificant.

Not really; the Trolls shattered the Aqir Empire and forced them apart into the Qarji/Silithids and Nerubians.

From the Hordes Player Guide, History of the Horde:
Furious, the warchiefs blamed each other for the failure, and the Horde’s fractured remains threatened to tear each other apart. Gul’dan knew he needed to act quickly to salvage what he could; to this end, he convinced the Shadow Council to do something unheard of. Blackhand the Destroyer was named Warchief of the Horde; he would lead the entirety of the orc race, not just his own (already formidable) clan. Many challenged the mighty Blackhand in these early days, but all were crushed, either by Blackhand’s own prowess or Gul’dan’s shadowy enforcers. Another unusual creature emerged from the darkness at this time: Garona, the now-legendary assassin. Garona was a lowly servant of Gul’dan, tasked with recording the war in writing; the mighty orc warriors held little value in reading and
writing, and the warlocks had little interest in spending their time chronicling history. Garona was a half-orc, but to this day I cannot say what her other parent was; we had thought her to be half-human early on, but she was already a young woman at this time. It would seem impossible for a human and an orc to have produced her, but her features did not match those of the draenei, or any other known race.
The humans proved to have even more tricks up their sleeves; the archmagi of the Kirin Tor and the priests of Northshire added much-needed magical support to the human armies as the battle was joined in earnest. It seemed that the catastrophic assault on Stormwind may have cost the orcs too much, but at a key point in the battles, the mighty Lord Anduin Lothar disappeared. In Lothar’s absence, the human forces were left with inferior leadership, and fell back to Stormwind’s walls. Anduin returned for only a short time, routing the orcs briefly, before disappearing again; the orcs learned later that he had first sought the Tome of Lost Divinity in the Deadmines, but his second departure was far more significant. With help from Garona and the apprentice mage Khadgar, Lothar slew his life-long friend, the traitor Medivh, in his tower. Gul’dan attempted to wrest the secret of Sargeras’s Tomb from Medivh’s mind as the Guardian died, but a psychic backlash slammed Gul’dan as Medivh perished.
At the same time, Garona infiltrated Stormwind, where she assassinated the mighty King Llane Wrynn before Lothar had a chance to return. With the king slain, morale fell, and Stormwind fell with it. Lothar arrived only in time to gather the surviving forces and retreat to the north; the orcs had won the First War.
Victory cost the orcs much; while Gul’dan remained comatose, Orgrim Doomhammer gained the title of Backstabber by slaying Blackhand and taking the mantle of Warchief of the Horde. While Orgrim was unusually loyal for an orc, he had uncovered the existence of the Shadow Council, and the truth about their manipulations of Blackhand. Doomhammer led a surprise assault on the citadel where the Shadow Council resided, and slaughtered nearly every warlock. Gul’dan awoke with a blade at his neck, and was forced to pledge his fealty to Doomhammer, whispering promises of vengeance under his breath.
So, for those who are still hazy on the Blackhand Doomhammer thing... Stormwind fell before he slew him.

I wish this wasn't retconned.I wouldn't say Retconned... remember Delt, at this point, the only 'draenei' they knew would be Akama's Ashtongue Broken, not the Player models we see now. Even in Last Guardian, she was merely said to look human with green skin and the red eyes, with a thicker face and small tusks in her mouth; the only retcon about her appearance since is the one line in the comics about her feet being twisted, more like hooves.
he archmagi of the Kirin Tor
There goes my theory about a third major magic school in the Eastern Kingdoms before the First War :(.
Heh, sorry Delt.

Not the Drakkari alone. Plus, they became Quarji and Nerubians because of the change in the habitat after the Sundering.

Well, the broken still resemble the draenei. If she didn't match a broken at all, she didn't match a draenei.Well sorta, but even in the comics she looks like an orc/human over a draenei heh.... but again, it's not really a retcon; she's always been a half-breed, and let people think there was some type of nascent human on Draenor... but some of what she says about her parentage; 'her mother was weak', 'her mother couldn't match the Orc strength' 'She(Garona) wasn't as strong as the other orcs growing up', that matches with what we know of female draenei, but not the Broken themselves; the Broken all being massive like the male Draenei heh.

Gonna have to disagree there Face; from the Jungle troll history section:
For thousands of years, the allied forces of the forest and jungle trolls fought the aqir, but never succeeded in winning a true victory. Eventually, due to the trolls’ persistence, the aqiri kingdom split in half, as its citizens fled to separate colonies in the far northern and southern regions of the continent. Two aqiri city-states emerged: Azjol-Nerub in the northern wastes, and Ahn’Qiraj in the southern desert. Thus, the qiraji and the nerubians are descended from the same race: the aqir. That's pre-Sundering as the Night Elves haven't rose up yet.

Sexual dimorphism, there isn't even a model for female broken draenei.
Anyways, what I said is a byproduct of Med'an hate that can be summarized in a few words:
The roots will heal in time... as will the entire world. The sacrifices have been made. Just as the orcs, humans, and night elves discarded their old hatreds and stood united against a common foe, so did Nature herself rise up to banish the Shadow...forever. As for me, I came back to ensure that there would be a future, to teach the world that it no longer needed Guardians. The hope for future generations has always resided in mortal hands.
- Medivh, Warcraft 3
(years later)
New guardianified!
Heh suppose so... but I don't care, Garona is still one of my favorite lore characters so I'm happy she's back again.

Wrong!
Apparently Blizz decided to work on it for a while. Unfortunately I can't find an image of the model.

I'm sorry Adams, but nowhere in your quote do I see something proving Faceshield's post wrong.
They broke the back of the Aqir before the Sundering......
