That's the point of this sudden b-s Retcon to the Lich King lore; they want to have him around in case, at some future point, they need to pull 'It was all a Setback!' thing again, like they did with Kael. But, I don't see it as Bolvar, more then likely it's going to be Tirion or Darion as the next King.
I could see it as Bolvar - otherwise the Alliance lost nothing at Wrathgate as it's clearly shown that he's alive. (Keep in mind I speak as a player first so I consider the polygons more than the actual lives lost)
Not that it would really matter, to be frank, but still. I'd say it's Bolvar at 80% - Tirion would refuse to do such a sacrifice as it'd mean abandoning the Light, and Darion... well, he's as angsty as Sylvanas' new speech so I doubt he would do it.
Would it though? I mean, Tirion has the strength and willpower to do it, plus the Ashbringer might offset the 'evil' power in the Armour. Darion is a possible threat yes.. but he's been Tirion's 'second' all through Wrath, I can see him offering himself instead of the Old Paladin. As for Bolvar... he's spent the last 'year' being tortured, burned alive, and all the rest; I could see him wanting to take time out, plus, having him like that could end up causing the Scourge to turn on the living in revenge for leaving him in the Citadel.

they would probably keep forces up north to keep this new lich king in check....and the only real reason a new lich king is needed is to control the scourge....so if over time they are able to get rid of the scourge then there would be no need for a new lich king.

Regardless of who actually replaces the Lich King, my question still remains unanswered :S
What do the horde and alliance DO about this new Lich King? Leave him to gather strength to become a threat as large or worse than Arthas' incarnation? Or deal with the problem whilst it's still managable?
That depends on the demeanor of the new Lich King. If it's just some person trying to keep the Scourge under control, they leave well enough alone. If not, then they'd have to deal with the problem eventually, but not necessarily right at that moment. By the time that the current Lich King is killed, the Scourge will have been so weakened that it would be alright to leave a standing force in Northrend to keep things from getting out of hand again.
If it does get out of hand, all they would have to do is re-mobilize to combat the problem head-on once again.
If you ask me, this whole idea of a new Lich King is not only full of lore-holes, but it's also a strategic nightmare.

Agreed. Tbh the problems for me are thus;
1) If as said above the demeanor of the new Lich King is just to control the Scourge then ok, but therein lies a massive problem. If the new Lich King is to be Bolvar (which tho not official, has been hinted at by many sources) then Bolvar himself has previous ties to the Alliance.
This in itself presents a huge power shift if any Alliance member have any personal ties or influence over Bolvar (Mother, Father, sister, brother, lover, offspring etc) allowing any of the mentioned to exert power over the new Lich King for whatever personal ends. This in itself would provoke an opposing leader, especially one as hot headed as Garrosh to launch some preventative counter attack
2) To not attempt to deal with the emergence of a new Lich King would be foolish for any national power. Both the Alliance and Horde would have to be retarded down to the lowest simpleton if anyone thought it would be acceptable to allow this new Lich King to sit in Northrend and muster his forces only to present a threat similar or worse to Arthas.
3) To just kill the new Lich King would just present the same problem as we have right now! So the only other option would be for some power to try to contain the Lich King ( which imo is absolutley ^&*!e).
Anyone got an opinion to this ?
Cos tbh I don't know how blizz can deal with this issue to the satisfaction of lore #$%^&s like myself :(
Well, Bolvar would have ties in the Alliance, but he would be bound by the Ashen Verdict (I would think) to remain on neutral ground. If he doesn't, and begins to muster forces to aid the Alliance, he would be seen as building up the Scourge once again by all parties. So, basically, if he doesn't just sit and keep the Scourge from growing and getting out of hand, he's screwed.
On the other hand, if it's not Bolvar, which I'm really hoping it's not, then it would go back to the second scenario I presented. The Scourge is far too weakened to present a formidable enemy, so standing armies are left to keep them in check.
In all honesty, the "New Lich King" situation is ridiculous. The whole driving force behind the Scourge is the Lich King. Cut the head from the snake, the body dies. Even if the remainder of the Scourge were to go on a rampage, they would have no direction, and thus would be unorganized and easily destroyed.
Apparently Uther and everyone else who says that the Lich King must exist completely forgot that lesson in their military academies.

Aye, it's a massive PITA.... and I really hate this; as it goes against the lore they penned already. It's one thing to change it for a good reason.. but to make it so they have the Lich King to fall back on at some point is idiotic.

I though it was Thoras Trollbane's kingdom of Stromgarde that destroyed Alterac, wasn't it?
Nah, the Black Dragonflight did most of the damage before the Outland Expedition. Stromgarde just occupied it during the assault on Capital City.

Well, the deal with the Horde was that they wouldn't touch Alterac; then Trollbane went in and kicked the hell out of the Horde and the Alterac loyals, holding the city till they told Capital city about what happened.

Yeah, that one is my favorite of the three we've seen. If this new one is actually the Fourth War, I think I may end up liking it the best.

Sylvanas is psychopathic, not psychotic, and I intend to prove it soon.

And the article claims that it was Uther.
Weird... when did that come around? In Tides of Darkness(book and game) it was Trollbane's forces....
