simple question will WoW ever be free to play? i know blizz makes a lot of money off of selling the game alone im thinking its enough to make the patches and keep everyone employed.

Nope. This game is one of their biggest incomings ever, I doubt they'll make this free,
ever.
I cannot stress that out enough.

No income = No new content.

I believe DDO went free because they didn't have enough players/subscribers

Well, someday World of Warcraft will stop being updated; eventually all things must come to a close.
What interests me is whether or not they will keep it active afterwards...
What kind of question is that? If you think back, Blizzard said they want to hit level 99 or 100 before the game ends. This is also the reason for level 85 and not 90 in Cataclysm, they want more room to work with before the end of the game. So that would mean we still have 3-4 more expansions to go, which will be 4-5 more years before the game is done.
Now, if you think back on any other games Blizzard has made (which you've probably never even tried), they *still* support online play for Diablo 1. The realm servers are still up and running for a game they haven't sold copies of for years.
D2 is not competitively played, yet their servers are still up. D2 itself takes up ~400-500 servers and connections. It is not cheap to run it, yet it's free to play.
WC2/3 are still supported, but to be fair there is competition play for these.
SC is still one of the biggest/best competitive games in the world, so it's no shock these are still running. But even if the game was %^&*, I assure you Blizzard would still have the servers online.

Even when Blizzard stops producing new content, they'll likely continue to charge, and players will continue to play.

When Blizzard stops producing new content, players would most likely find games with new and or innovative content.
