It is actually quite hard to find a pet that works properly for your gameplay. I have tried out the Turtle in Wailing Caverns and the armor on it is quite huge compared to other pets you can get. That might be a good tanking pet. I have a Hunter myself and I find that there arn't really any decent tanking pets. I always seem to over aggro my pet and the target starts wailing on me.
To be honest, it's down to how you play as well as getting a pet. If I was you, just go and get a pet and try it out. Least you can get them for free lol.

BM specced while leveling, I hardly took aggro from my bear, and my bear was tough to kill, meaning less downtime and more pew pew time.

To start with, you are going to want a ferocity pet, any one will do, but a tallstrider or moth might be the absolute best.
Why?
Because tenacity pets don't get thunderstomp right away, meaning they wont be doing massive aggro holding until level 44 at the soonest. Ferocity pets will hold aggro better up until that point, since they will do more damage. Tallstriders have an ability that will make them get hit less, and moths have a self-heal, so they will both have better survivability than your average ferocity pet.
note though, this wont help very well with aoe leveling. The only pete under 44 with aoe are bear (but see the above problems with bears) and crocs. Both of these do lower damage than ferocity pets, and dont hold aggro as well until they get thunderstomp.
Your best bet until 44 is to use ferocity and just focus on single-target.
After 44 bears & crocs have the best aoe potential. But for single-target you will kill things faster using a ferocity pet (though you will need to be much more careful with healing it). For elites, or soloing 2 and 3 man quests, a turtle or a warp stalker has the best survivability. (unfortunately warp stalkers arent available till level 63)
If you have the gold for the stable space, I would have at least 3 pets: a ferocity (preferably moth or tallstrider) who will also double as your instancing pet, a bear of croc for aoe, and a turtle for extra hard mobs.
If you dont get attached to your pets, keep an eye on areas where new ones can be tamed, as it is very difficult to level 3 pets simultaniously.
