Or you can just garotte them and not have to worry about them blinking away. For three seconds? lolololol
Wow people are stupid.
Cheap Shot forces a blink. Congrats? You just wasted 40/60 energy to make him do something he was going to do ANYWAY, and he took very little damage.
Garrote is *exactly like a stun* to a mage, only better because he can't blink/trink out of it. He just has to stand there and take it. Meanwhile, you have a dot on him and you're pounding face. Now when he blinks away, at least he has already taken damage and has a dot on him.
After he blinks, get ready to Deadly Throw his sheep attempt or whatever he tries until you get close. If you didn't shiv him during the garrote, you're flat out terrible. Your next goal is to KS before blink comes back.
The rest of the fight revolves around blowing cooldowns to try and stay close to him. No cooldowns = no win.
Quyx, Fist already explained it perfectly. If you're too dense to get it, well congrats to all the mages on your server- they have at least one rogue that's a totally free kill. You're just too ignorant to change your play style and exploit something in the game that could benefit yourself. Sure it might not work the second time on the mage when you duel them, but it
is
the best choice to open with when they are not expecting it. Otherwise, yes what Fist laid out is great, I don't think the Cheap Shot + Gouge trick will fool a mage twice. I recognize that, but I still stand by my opinion that is it a better way to open on a mage when they are not expecting something like that. They expect you to open with Garrote. Your inability to compromise or even consider just shows that you are not able to adapt to the metagame of World of Warcraft PvP.
Edit (in order to respond to Gauroth edit):As for 'waste' - even if we accept your doubtful claim that CS/Gouge 'wastes' a blink, you've also wasted your opener for zero damage.
In a lot of situations vs a lot of classes, CS is a great opener. Becasue of mages abilities, CS is a terrible opener- L2 pick the right tool for the job.It is not a waste, you get upwards of three combo points from it. Those go towards your Kidney Shot, a Kidney Shot that will not be countered by Blink because you forced the mage to use it. Cheap Shot is a terrible opener by itself against a mage, I acknowledge that. Doing what I say is not wasting an opener, neither is your way with Garrote. Both are good ways to open on a mage, I just think my way is better.

Well sorry to say, but Garrote
is
better. You're entitled to think what you will, but with a Mutilate spec (w/ Improved Kidney Shot and Cold Blood) I prefer it my way.

which ever way u open ( i personally prefer garrote because it may
force an early iceblock) do NOT IGNORE the water elemental if
a frost mage summons that. its a key to a mage's strategy. get rid
of it asap
other than that, mages are quite easy and predictable tbh
