str > ap

But where does Attack Power come in? AP increases damage as well.
Why hasn't AP been ranged here?
Divine Strength
,
Blessing of Kings
, and the fact 1 Strength is the same as 2 AP (by default) for a Paladin are usually the reasons. Generally, you're only going to be getting plate gear.
For example, I may use
Spaulders of Egotism
over
Spaulders of the Giant Lords
, even if Spaulders of the Giant Lords has 166.98 AP on it, just for the extra 1% crit that the +50 Agility will give. But it's still a bad idea. I'd only suggest doing this if your retribution set is quest greens and you're seeing stuff in Ulduar going unused. 52 Agility will make 1% crit, compared to 46 Crit Rating to get the same effect. You're trading good amounts of AP for Crit when you start looking at non-plate melee DPS armor, and strength is our best stat to improve DPS just because of how well it scales with buffs we provide.

Get 263 hit then go for 25% unbuffed crit to keep vengence up then stack str and expertise rating will come with higher level gear.

Crit will come naturally on gear, no need to try and go for it, just keep stacking strength and youll be in good shape. Crit is actually barely better in importance than pure AP. If you want something to look for other than Hit and Str, look for expertise.

For the most part this is true but you have to watch out if your gearing up in toc/htoc since alot of the gear seems to trade crit for armor pen. But when in doubt stack str

Sure, but even so, armpen isnt a bad thing, as long as its couples with gratuitous amounts of str/hit/exp. One wouldent choose the peice with crit, just for the sake of crit, gotta look at the whole item, then look at your whole gearset, mainly in terms of hit, but exp as well.
Im no crit hater though, 40% now no buffs, but i like to pvp. PvE should trade alot for ap/str. Also dont hate on pure ap in general. Some rogue rings/necks are better than their strength counterparts. The blue JC i187 rogue ring still kicks ass, mainly becuse of the new gems, but its itemized so well.

I wish there was a cool tool that would allow you to input different specs and gear to see which one would provide the highest dps. Then you could compare gear easily and quickly. You could even input gear before the run so that you know if you need it or not.

Meta in the head slot should not be AP nor Crit. It should be the Agility meta, first off. Second, str is not the best for ret, hit uptill the cap is, as was said, after that its str. Remember, agility and strength are basic stats and are multiplied by 1.1 when you have Kings on you. AP is not, nor is crit rating (hence the meta). Like I said before, rogue/feral gear is still very attractive becuse it replaces str with ap in the
right amounts coupled with crit.
But im a crit *!@#$.
The link i gave in the first post can be followed and you can determine gear choices with fair certainty from the numbers there.
