It's only use is PvP. Are you trying to use it for PvP?

It's worthless for leveling. Mobs generally only have a 5% chance to crit (unless you're fighting something higher level than you). It doesn't add to your DPS or survivability. Skip it, there are better talents.

I get what you're saying, and not arguing, but what if you're AoE grinding? If each mob has a 5% chance to crit and you have 10 or so mobs hitting you, does it become more viable? Or is it just standard operating procedure for paladins to level by AoE grinding and this is already considered in your answer?
On that topic, I was putting together possible builds for AoE grinding (my paladin is semi-retired, but I keep brining him out of storage, and he's just level 50). I went 51 points in Protection for survivability while grinding, and 20 points into Retribution for extra damage - including 2 points in Eye for an Eye. Are those spent bettwe elsewhere? Thanks for any input!
P.S. Here's
the build
I was considering.

No, for 2 reasons. If you're aoe grinding as a tank, you're gonna have defense rating. And also, reg mobs don't crit for very much compared to players.

Drop Eye for and Eye because you'll be defense capped as I already said. Also drop the two points in Guardian's Favor (it has absolutely no use in aoe grinding). Instead take Divine Guardian (which you have to take Divine Sacrifice to get). Then take the 5 points out of benediction and get Imp Judgements and Heart of the Crusader. That should leave you with 1 point which I'd put in Persuit of Justice (I'd even take another point from Conviction to get the second point in PoJ).

Thanks Hyperspacerebel. That's very interesting, I hadn't considered Sacred Shield (never gotten a paladin to 80). I thought the saved mana from Benediction would be handy since I'd mostly be casting instants, and that Judgements wouldn't be that useful since they only hit one target and I'd be up against a gang of mobs every time. Maybe I'm in too much of a frost-mage-AoE frame of mind, losing sight of how it's different from the way a paladin does it.
Thanks again!

You have way more than enough mana when aoe grinding at 80. And the first point in imp judgments is so you can keep your 969 rotation up. The second is because there is no where else to put it, and it helps if your rotation gets messed up for whatever reason.

So, the 969 rotation I've seen for tanking applies for AoE grinding, too? I suspected as much, looked up a couple of threads on the topic, good to know I'm on the right track.
Now, my paladin is only at 50 right now, so I don't have the mana I will at 80, and I tried out some AoE grinding last night and hit mana issues. Any different advice for getting to 80?

Mana isnt an issue. Use Blessing of Sanc

The thing is, I
did
use Blessing of Sanctuary and I
did
hit mana issues (again, at 50, not at 80). Any advice?

you did not pull enough mobs

It'll get easier. You'll have to pick up some gear with avoidance or block on it in Outlands, that's all. The other option is to pull more mobs at once, if you can manage.

Hmm, that's something to look forward to! I do need to get some more avoidance, I think, and make sure all my armor is plate (some is still mail).
Out of curiosity, how does the fight go faster when there are more mobs? I get that you have mana incoming from Blessing of Sanctuary and you have Reckoning going off more often... is that it? Or is there more that I'm not considering?
I was going to ask whether there's a way to keep a gang of humanoid mobs from fleeing en masse when they get down to their threshold (can keep one close using Judgement of Justice), but I guess it's not really a concern because they all come back eventually, and bringing back a friend or two isn't such a bad thing for a paladin (again, thinking like a mage, adds are bad).
Thanks for all the advice!
