I did Halls of Lightning last night and recount said I did around 1500 DPS. I'm starting to do ToC and other instances and the numbers don't match up with what everyone else is saying.

Step 1) Get Recount
Step 2) Don't measure your dps on trash
Step 3) Look at your dps on a boss
Step 4) ?
Step 5) Profit!
So thats why I couldn't find any underpants this morning..

I measure my DPS by how much better I do compared to the DPS under me, and how many other DPS'ers I need to beat to get number 1 (in Damage Done of course :D). That always changes, so I never have a single number to go off of; I usually just tell someone a range of numbers or my spec/what kind of gear I've got. That usually gets me into any pugs I need to (vault.../shudder).

No . . . just don't measure your dps against other people. It makes you too focused on dps, and you neglect other things. Compare to your own dps on the same fights. A static boss like patch will net more dps than one with add phases, etc. Always keep in mind what your raid expects of you. If your kiting something, kite it, don't dps the boss, etc.
I forgot that raid awareness doesn't show up on an armory page or my forum post, but yes, there are a crapton of other duties that I'm required to cover that are number one (kiting adds, killing adds, etc.), and that comes before my personal DPS. However I stand by my gauging my personal DPS on a fight to fight basis solely because there is no encounter that allows all classes to properly gauge their DPS. There are too many gimmick fights in the game (save Ignis and Patch) that have encounter buffs (Runes of Power, XT's heart phase) that skew DPS numbers, not taking into account personal buffs (Improved Tracking, Murder, etc.) that further skew them on certain fights. So, instead of saying "Hey, I did 6k on XT" and realizing later that I'm only around 5k normally, I'd rather judge myself on an encounter-to-encounter basis so that I know what I need to improve/work on next time.

No, no, you didn't offend me at all, it's just that I'm extremely competitive; I work my butt off to be the best asset to the raid I can be in every aspect, and in the end I work towards both the expectations set before me by both my GM and myself, which is why I gauge myself on a case to case basis. Don't get me wrong, I completely agree with you on using a single fight multiple times to compare DPS, my way just suits me better :).
