This:
Or even as funny as using a gem Focusing Lens to project a coloured beam onto some random player in Org, and use a macro that says something like
/me begins to drain gold from %t.
/me gains 2 gold.
/in 2 /me gains 4 gold.
/in 4 /me gains 3 gold.
/in 6 /me gains 4 gold.
Then watching the guy flip @#$% 'cause he thinks you're jackin' his gold lol is a prime example of a harmless prank. There is no debuff or real loss of gold involved. I actually liked this so much I used it on a guildmember and we both had a laugh with it. But to purposely abuse game mechanics to get rid of newbies or "play a prank" on someone is just wrong and why pre-patch 3.2, mages had a hard time getting in WG raids. You know, it's pretty obvious you're overreacting here. You're talking about 15 minutes, man. 15 minutes of however long you've played this game and intend to continue to play this game.
This:
You: "OH GOD WHY? How could someone be so cruel, heartless, and unfair as to separate me from my BG of choice for 15 whole minutes! They should be BANNED! Banned, I say. FOREVER! Never again will these thoughtless bastards taint the purity of MY GAME! Huff... huff..."
Me: "You could always make a sandwich. Works for the hunters when they have time to kill. If you're lucky, by the time you get back, the debuff will be gone and you'll never have to deal with this "tragedy" ever again." is my response to what you have to say.
End of story.

I would respond but I really have no clue what you're talking about. I am Xaratherus - or at least that's my nick on the forums and my main character in-game. I'm the one who typed what you just quoted. I am fully aware you were the one I quoted.
The reason I quoted you is because Issuldar had made a statement that he was sick of people using the sentence "they should stop taking games so seriously." to "justify their (clearly heinous) acts", so I quoted you (who used a very similar sentence to the one he apparently loathes so severely) to show that that sentence is used by people who share his opinion, so it's stupid and pointless for him to get angry when people say it.

I made a macro that says "(myname) has reported you as Away From Keyboard. Please type /afk to remove this". I use it in alterac valley before we start so huge noobs can leave and we can win.
I recently did it and someone reported me for it. Should I be worried at all? I really don't think it is in violation of any of the rules but I want to be sure.
Whirlwind, right? >.>
I did fall for this once in WSG I think... It was really irritating because at that time my char was topping the damage/honor charts. Although I find it funny now, if it was your macro I fell for, I still hope you get punished for it one day by an almighty GM :P

No, you can't be banned for it, but it's not as funny as using a Mole Machine from Brewfest in AV and telling people to click it for Buffs, then watching them all leave.
Or as funny as a Mage making a portal & people clicking on it thinking it's a Food Table.
Or even as funny as using a gem Focusing Lens to project a coloured beam onto some random player in Org, and use a macro that says something like

Well now i have to try that now don't i :P

it's only funny when your 6...
/me begins to drain gold from %t.
/me gains 2 gold.
/in 2 /me gains 4 gold.
/in 4 /me gains 3 gold.
/in 6 /me gains 4 gold.
this is funny though.

my thoughts on this.
In the first place you SHOULDN'T be doing it. (note I say shouldn't...) that said if you DO it, you do so acknowledging that you run the risk of a ban. To be doing it specifically to "get noobs out" as you said in the OP is unfair to other players. Sure you might get a better team. but you may discourage people from even trying to have a go. How are these "noobs" going to learn if they are not given the opportunity? add to that, you are still preventing people from playing the game the way they like to.
That said. people do exist who find this sort of thing funny (and it CAN be good for lols, especially when the guy does it for say the 8th or 9th time in a row). if you are one of the new people, rather than blindly doing what it says, ask a guildmate first via guild chat. (If your guildy sets you up to take the fall, then you are possibly in the wrong guild but anyways :P)
Basically I am against this practice in theory, but at the end of the day it's not a game ending issue.

Probably not... but you can be banned for having a trojan or keylogger on your computer for a day.
Best part that ban can happen when you don't even have one on your computer. Its fun.

I parodied his words intentionally. :)
One of the things that I've found to "get" to people (which is sometimes the closest you can get to making them think) is to take what they've said and turn it inside out and point it back at them. You're right - it very often makes them angry, but occasionally it will make them give some deeper thought to what they've said.
I personally feel that the original poster's idea is immature, the MMO equivalent of the old "there's a swimming pool on the roof" joke played on the new kid at school. But like many a joke, the humor is only visible to the prankster, not the pranked. For the folks who are just saying, "Laugh it off," that is often easier said than done; I would probably make even money betting that some of those saying that those in the pranked crowd are being too serious are talking out their arse, and would probably be stung if something similar happened to them.
Then again, I also can't argue against it too fiercely, because I'd be hypocritical to do so; the majority of people have gotten some pleasure from schadenfreude at one time or another in the past.
