I'm sure this is a simple question as I've seen others do it, but if I want to create my own groups with the items (my own combination of head, chest, leg etc) pieces how do I do that?
I basically want to create my own sets and then use the item comparinson tool to compare them.
Thanks.

Read
the entire help page on Wowhead's Item Comparison tool
, especially the section "Managing Your Items".
Long story short: get all the items on the item comparison page, then drag and drop.

I did read the help link, and I still didn't see what I was looking for. All I can see is if I drag an item that's by itself it will swap places with another item. If I have a pre-existing group (say a T9 set for whatever class) I can drag an indvidual item out of that group. However I can't seem to combine different individual items into one custom group.
Let me see if I can explain it better. As an example, say I wanted to create a group with the head and shoulders from the Rogue T8 set and Legs and gloves from the T9 set, and then throw in a crafted chest piece.
Now I know I can view the whole T8 or T9 set as a group, and I know I can view all the pieces I mentioned above individually, but can I create a custom group? Not a side by side comparison of the all those pieces, but one group.

Ok well I just did it, but I did it by typing out the individual items in a link.

Drag the item icon, not the top bar.

Gryphon is correct. If you drag using the top bar handle, you'll move columns around. If you drag the individual item icon, you'll move the item between columns.
