Don't come back. If you want to quit properly and control your life, don't start over again.
Find something you want to do. Work out. Ride a bike. Flirt with girls. Improve your grades. Play singleplayer-games. Watch movies. Learn stuff on Youtube/Wikipedia.
The best idea is actually to learn about how to properly seduce women. After a couple of months of training, you'll get "win" almost every time you go to a party.
Whatever you do, don't come back. You know how WoW is. You start off light, and do a little bit more, and a little bit more, and suddenly you're leading five raids a week, wiping for 5 hours per day.

In short, I'm wondering if there is a way to play WoW without making a complete and utter commitment of most of my time?
PvE is retarded now (easily done), but wow will always be time sink.
The only way I see wow as not wasting time is to log in from time to time to play some BGs.

I actually ran into a situation similar to the OP's when I last played WoW, where I was just raiding all the time. Then I stopped and started PvPing when I didn't have time to raid. Then I stopped altogether when I couldn't afford to keep playing.
If I do come back to WoW, when I have the time and money, I plan to play more casually and experience as much of the game as possible. Multiple characters of
my
favorite classes and races, on Horde
and
Alliance, on PvE
and
PvP servers. I'm going to explore every nook and cranny and get every quest and see every dungeon and pwn every noob when I feel like it, at my own pace.
You could try something like that.
