Well, Eyes of the Beast comes in handy with that kind of stuff, but theres a nice trick to just make the pet port to you, works at Thaddius but also at other kind of ledges. When youre down, and he's still stuck upstairs, just spam CTRL+1 and CTRL+2 (Atk and follow), do this for a few sec and he (most of the time) ports to you.

Mainly you just learn through experience.
After awhile you will be able to keep track of your pet's health without even looking directly at it, so that mainly becomes a non-issue. And if you manage your pet correctly you usually don't have to heal it alot though there are some exceptions.
There really aren't many situations where you need to dismiss your pet. There was Thad in Naxx, and there's occasionally a jump like in Nexus where it's a good idea, but those occasions are pretty rare. There aren't any in Ulduar that i can think of.
The biggest thing is that you really have to learn every new boss fight from two perspectives. The first times through you mainly focus on what you need to do yourself and your pet may just have to die, but after you have that down you learn how to keep your pet alive and to maximize its DPS.

Agreed, as long as you learn to always control the pet in passive, its not biggy. The only ones that I can think of that can be annoying are the last boss in Nexus (spam recall/attack to avoid stacks, or just dismiss), and Heigan (where the pet is never clever enough to not stand in the fire, even if the tank is doing a good job). Oh and a quick recall on the fire walls in OS, but thats just a chance to feel smug when other hunters in the group forget :)
Generally, though, the pets are ignored for things that would make it difficult (immune to aoe in Emalon, doesn't get killed by deep breath against sapphiron, charge is ignored in Thaddius).
Anyway pets are fun. And don't forget the overwhelming amount of faff they cut out when soloing mobs.

Pets arent a liability provided the player just keeps in mind that s/he has one and knows its limitations.
They were once, of course, like in Kara on the Shade, when pets USED to be able to trigger the flame wreath, and wipe the raid.
Blizz made sort of a compromise. Pets are no longer effected by many of the boss's special abilities that have the potential to buff or catastrophically effect the raid. So pets dont get Thad or Lothab buffs (which is one of the reasons why BM hunters are weaker in raids) but they also cant be used as part of "chain damage"--in Emalon's lightning or KT's ice thing, for example. (This is because the hunter cant really control where the pet attacks from).
There are some fights where a reasonable amount of pet management is just part of the class. Using Thad as an example, I always dismiss my pet--but it doesn't really take long, I do it in the time the Tessla coil is overloading, and I have never missed a jump because I was dismissing my pet.

if you dont want to learn and master pet management.... dont roll a hunter. period. Go roll a mage

The only problem I have with my pet is on Heigan. During the part where the Melee DPS is dancing and the ranged is on the platform, the pet AI does what it normally does, attack the enemy from behind. Unfortunately, this usually puts my pet squarely in the slime and it dies in a hit or two.
For that fight, I typically use it to mark the "safe zones" so people can mill around its dead body when the time comes and know that they're safe.
But yes, the days of pets being a liability are history if you can manage your pet. Growl off, and be conscious of movement paths, since your pet cannot jump and you'll be good to go.
