It came from early hunters rolling on everything they could possibly use. Even lvl 60 epics intended for hunters had spirit itemized. This lead some hunters to be very confused.
Items like

also confused people. Hunters with staves was an alien concept.
But the term persisted. Whenever you see hunters wearing str, spell power or straight int/spi gear, especially if they outrolled an ideal class to take the item, it's enough to curdle the blood.

Back in Ye olde days of raiding, leveling over yonder Vanilla hills, the developers of Blizzard hath no clue as to the itemization in which a hunter needeth. Furthermore, hunters themselves were similarly confused, for as a hunter, almost every stat in game was useful in some way or another. +SP? Boosts your Arcane Shot! +Healing? Boosts your Mend Pet! +Str? Usually came along with agility or AP, and who doesn't like a melee hunter?
It was this crazy system which caused hunters to roll on everything, as they technically needed everything! Which really #$%^ed people off... And to thing day, all loot is known as hunter loot.
