There are more things to remember than spec. Rogues need good gear. Use CC liberally, so you won't have to deal directly with mutiple mobs. Not that you can't take them (if you do things right), it's just that they cause too much downtime. Up until 60, Herbalism is great for Lifeblood, both to save yourself and to reduce downtime.
Pop your CDs. Sprint and Vanish are lifesavers, but remember that the mobs are at full health after any battle they survive. Don't forget your evasion. Anytime you go need to go toe to toe with mobs, Evasion reduces damage greatly.
Take the time to do instances and get some good weapons and other gear. Until I hit 50 with one of my Rogues (when I specced for Mutilate), I had a scattered spec (enough in subtlety for camouflage, crit from assa, and the rest in combat), and I used Gouge/Backstab for combo points. I had no problems at all, although my leveling speed was not that great. But it was fun, and I certainly didn't die much.
My point in short: learn to use all your abilities, and get good gear.

All of this, and..
This is going to sound stupid, but when I first started playing my rogue, I found myself just charging up to mobs and wailing away like I was a warrior or something.
Rogues are about being a devious backstabbing mofo. Sneak up behind your mob, stun, whack whack whack finish, repeat.
Once I stopped thinking I could go toe-to-toe with mobs (which you can, but it's really now how they're designed) I got a bit more successful. That being said, I've deleted the 5 rogues pre-30 now because the early levels are just painful.

i went assas...but i started off in combat to get the 5%hit...the sub for the stealth...so i didnt see mutilate til like 64 or something...im 79 now and it was rough but i learned to play the class in a very fast way...since i got mutilte...life is good:)...but really all in all you cant mess up a rogue for lvlin...but they are very gear dependant...so stay on top of all that and you will be fine

How i levelled to 70:
Combat spec
open with CS then pop SnD, when the stun from CS ends pop evasion, keep spamming SS until you have 5CP then Eviscerate if the mob is still alive keep spamming ss if SnD is about to die throw another out if not just build to Evis.
If you are still taking a lot of damage, use kidney shot in place of evis, your fight will last longer, but you will take much less damage.
If you get multiple mobs drop a blade flurry. By the time I had blade flurry, i would throw my ranged at 2-3 mobs to pull them to me use a couple of SS then SnD & BF and 1 would go down followed very quickly by the other 2 with little problems
If you are looking like you might die use lifeblood (all lowbie rogues should have herbalism - I still have it at 80 because i like picking flowers), or vanish, if you are a nelf, shadowmeld is another little Get out of jail manouver.
When you get Killing Spree, this is also a great little manouver for dealing with multiple mobs if you pull more than you can handle (any more than 3/4 though and a vanish is probably the best way out)
If you are stuck in a battle with a single opponent and need a quick heal, use gouge+bandage (you will not get full bandage as gouge last <8 seconds, but should keep your ass out the fire)
When i hit 70 i re-specced to the standard 51/13/7 Mutilate build which to be blunt is f@#king epic
I do not pretend to be an expert, and much of what I have said may be considered incorrect but this style of play i found to be enjoyable and effective for solo levelling - I do not give definitive answers, just advice based on my experience
