Alright alright, I can be serious. My black hole proposition was just a way to suggest that the best way to defend oneself from a laser attack would be to use something that would absorb that energy.
Come on, you knew I understood your analogy, right?
EDIT: Or, use a large focusing dish to reflect it precisely back to a given spot. Unfortunately this will be easy to spot by the enemy.

So the object is shielded from light? What about physical objects?
Generally, most such shields in science fiction protect against both kinetic and non-kinetic disturbances, but I suspect that the initial shields in research will only block one or the other.

Much better. That's what skyfire was talking about. My problem is that something that can absorb the energy of light, and shield against physical intervention could be very dangerous. Put into the wrong hands, a person could make prisoners out of the whole world with a system of 'bubble cells', or just wrap a bubble around the earth, which would absorb all sunlight, leaving us in a dark, icy death.

The problem with your doomsday scenario is that that would require gigantic, simply enormous amounts of power (not energy) for sustained periods of time.
Alternatively, in your scenario, that same power could be used in a positive way. In the realm of Star Wars (zomg, jumping universes), the core world called Coruscant has such a system of bubble cells, which among other uses, provides both defense and control over the weather. They do not generally become opaque that I know of...

It doesn't necessarily have to be. I could possibly be as easy as the coating on an object (IE: for the visible spectrum of light, a white object will reflect heat, while a black object will absorb it.). Now, we'd just have to find the coating that would absorb the frequency that the laser is using.
I'm probably way off though.

imagine being trapped inside a bubble shield with a nuclear bomb attatched to the shield producer. The nuclear bomb would trigger if the shield is turned off. The bubble is about 30 feet in diameter. There is no food or water, and the shield generator has enough fuel to run for 7 days, and the nuclear bomb will deactivate in 6.8 days. Humans die in 3 days with no water.
I thought of this in a few minutes, and I'm not evil. Imagine this in the hands of a terrorist... Poping bubbles around an aircraft engine while in flight... poping one around half of a turbine in the hoover dam... poping them around half of people....
This thing would be horrible.

Yeah, and so is any nuclear device in the hands of a terrorist; in fact, a lot of items developed for the good of the people are deadly in the hands of the wrong type of people. You can't stop science.

most of my taxes went to the war that i don't even support.. u can thank bush for that..
Actually I thank unintelligent voters that define thier politics by one liners, like you just did. Go go gadget critical thought.

Guys, this isn't a "Let's discuss Bush" debate. If you want that, make one yourself. Stay on topic!

so what did bush do that was good for america?
and how could that possibly outweigh the negatives?
That wasn't my point at all...
Here... try this...
1) Read his post and my reply.
2) Re read them
3) Think about what part of his post my post is critical of.
4) Re read them
5) Try out the 'thought' thing one last time, just in case you still didn't get it.
6) Now read your post
7) Ask yourself "Did you misunderstand my point?"
If Yes - Good Job
if No - Go back to step one.

what about electro-magnetic shield producer.. it works on the principle that a electrical built up around the object and uses the same idea of how molecules can not touch and when the laser "hits" it uses a build up of energy to counter the beam
When I was a kid my mom had a 'BeanFan'... it was a little handheld fan she carried in her purse that was in the shape of a palm sized bean. She would break that ugly thing out on hot days in church.
My mom's 'BeanFan' would work better at shielding you from light than an electromagnetic field, because at least the beanfan casts a shadow.

Just compress the bulk of the machinery into a 600 pound object with a focusing lens, like light artillery, such as a 57mm AT gun. A squad of 4 could operate it with some form of light protective goggles.. Just cut the power of the laser into a fourth, it could turn out to be a very effective anti-infantry weapon.
