laser are light, so if a beam of light was traveling the speed of light away from us. would we even see it? would whoever we're firing at even see it?
Just add laser sight!
Wait,
what?

I think with the development of lasers in warfare will come development of non-kinetic shielding, much like you might see in Star Trek.
We might as well add light-sabers into the mix too.

Unlikely. Lightsabers will never exist, or if they do, it will be another millennium before we understand the physics requisite to create them. They require the control of light... while we're still struggling with the theory and methods to break the universal speed limit. I.e., light still controls us.

People trying to scientifically explain star trek make me lol.
@Queggy - I've been inside the ABL during my AF days. It is monstorous inside that plane. There is so much technology that goes into it. We'll be well into nano warfare before we get all that crammed into a gun.
Then, there is usability. Before the ABL fires it has to cover all its windows and the pilots have to wrap up thier heads to shield thier eyes from the intense light. If a mosquito happens to be in front of it when it fires, the reflections off the mosquito would permanantly blind all the pilots if they didn't.

Star Trek*. Shrugging it off as foolery is idiocy itself. I wasn't trying to explain it scientifically, only describe it.

Fixed, thanks. Now, I'd like to hear you talk more about non kinetic light, please. =)

there is science behind star wars stuff. perhaps one day we too can create planets....with lasers...to kill other planets..
Careful. Skyfire seems a little touchy about the 'star wars' / 'star trek' distinction, regardless of context.
@Interest - I sense a great and destructive war in the future...Would you mind expanding this a little?

Heh. I said non-kinetic shielding (not light). Within those realms of science fiction, your general "I've got some metal in the way of you and I" is considered kinetic shielding, as it deals with objects delivered via kinetic means. And while "I've got some metal between you and I" works against light... it doesn't work for very long.

I just not understanding what you are talking about. Are you talking about some way to shield the light itself to make it a projectile?
Post by
Skyfire
No, I'm talking about shielding some object (which is being attacked via light) without using some other object. You can call it a electric force shield, an electromagnetic shield, whatever.
Post by
MyTie
So the object is shielded from light? What about physical objects?

You know what would be a great way to shield yourself vs. a light attack? Place a black hole between you and the light source.

Boots, I'm a little disappointed in you. That is like saying "The best way to dodge bullets is to climb inside of a meat grinder".

Nah, that's definitely not the
best
way. Meat grinders could be pierced by some bullets.

I don't think the bullets would matter to you anymore, and thats the point. The light gun wouldn't matter to you in the event of a black hole being next to you, unless you are trying to defend yourself from light coming from a distant solar system, in which case the black hole can be positioned far enough away from you as to not compress your body into a tiny point.
