There was no hacking or exploiting involved. They left the images open to be viewed - security through obscurity isn't security.
I'm emphasising in my own précis that he's only 17 because it makes me even more mad that the club hasn't immediately backed-off but I wouldn't feel any different were it a 30 year-old.

Sorry if I'm programming-dumb, but how does one "go into the source code." That sounds like more than them putting the links up too early. It sounds like they didn't secure their website properly, so he broke into the programming to find what he needed.
It's the difference between leaving something out on the lawn near your curb, and someone reasonably mistaking it as having been put there for anyone to take, and leaving something in your home and someone noticing that you left your doors unlocked. I don't think that someone can come in and rob you just because the back door was unlocked, you know. It's about intent- if the links were up early, there is no way to tell that they weren't supposed to be up. If the person noticed the security was turned off, and so found a way to get into the system to find stuff they knew hadn't been made publicly available yet, then I kind of agree with the club.

So, I could put an image on an image share website. At that point it's publicly viewable but what are the chances of someone happening upon it? This is what I mean by "security through obscurity".
What if I made a post here and linked it in that sneaky way we can do that hides text but you can see it if you quote?
Now would you be breaking the law if you quoted my post, noticed a link and went to it? If you then shared the images (without making money off them)?
The source code of a web page doesn't make much sense visually to humans so we make browsers turn it into something we like to see, that doesn't mean that links in code aren't public.

Elhonna - They have a public website, with information they made public off of that website. The public now has that information. Their own fault.

That's what I was trying to figure out- is it something that was just on the website that he found, or was there some kind of data-mining or something that he was doing. Don't know anything about programming. If it's a link you can accidentally find, just by doing normal stuff, then you're right. If there was some piece of code that allowed him to "hack" into their non-public data, then they're right. I wasn't clear on what the actual procedure was that had happened.
Like- if I leave my bank account number on my facebook profile like a moron, then it's my fault you have it. If you screen-shot my stupidity and show people it, it's on me. If you use it to go to my bank and access my money, then that's still you committing the crime.

The firefox shortcut to viewing a page's source (not website, sorry) is Ctrl + U. I'm not sure of the shortcut for other browsers, but every browser has the capacity.
If one doesn't want something to be viewed publicly, it can be uploaded through FTP to a location that is orphaned (so that the only way to access it is to guess the URL or have access to the FTP) or private (password protected). As far as I'm aware, anyway.

I'd agree with that. I'd like to see a comprehensive approach to education. However, if you have a student with behavioral problems, that consistently fails at science/math education, and the parents and kid believe that student needs to stay in science/math because "my little pumpkin is so smart", then there needs to be a hatchet. That kid needs to go learn how to cook, or clean teeth, or be a cop, or something that will get him out of the way so kids who are actually good at science/math, and who enjoy learning can do it in peace.

Ok are you ready to learn how to be a l337 internet haxr!
Open up firefox, go to a website. Hit Ctrl-U
Now darken the lights in your room, and take a picture of the glow of your monitor on your face. And then in the style of the girl from Jurassic Park say
"This is HTML.... I know this"

I read this as "I'm not particularly interested in getting dinner or cuddles this evening, so I'll hammer away with the sarcasm."

Apparently his character name in WoW was "Conservative" and stores in Norway pulled WoW from the shelves when he shot everyone up.
If you think about it, the Horde invading an Alliance town and taking it over is probably not the kind of message to give to paranoid people.

Headline News
I was pretty surprised to see this pop up on Yahoo!'s headline News just now. Im not surprised they screwed up the Headline (Diablo II beta?)
Anyhow, just found it interesting to see a game beta show up in the national news spotlight.

Ugh; why the hell is it always the video games/heavy metal/books? Seriously, can't it actually be the person for once and not his environment?

Which will end when they die of old age, so we're almost out of the "ewww- video games" era, I think.
